I have a 2018 TRDORP with a 3” ReadyLift and I was looking at the 285’s. I have 265’s on it now stock from my dealer. My lift shop suggested Toyo A/T 2’s would work with no to minimal mods for rubbing.

From what I have read (note - no first hand experience) 285's will rub at full lock turning and for some reason when backing up. They "might" also rub on your UCAs. If they rub on the UCAs I would not drive it home. If it is just the front bumper lip and mudflap, I wouldn't hesitate to drive it home and then get a good long look at everything you need to trim.

Probably a better option is to go ahead and have a cheap spacer lift installed at the same time.

In 275/70 the only tire I found in less then E load, but not P size was Kumho AT51. Installed it and happy. No rub.

Have a 2018 T4R OR prem. What is the minimum lift to allow for 285/70/17 BFGK02’s on TRD pro rims? Thinking 2.5” spacers front and 1” rear.

I have the same truck. I'm a bit of a newbie, but I just recently asked the same questions, and you're going to get answers all across the board.

Some people will tell you not to run TRD Pro rims with 285s because the rims aren't wide enough (7 inches). 285's call for wheels that are 7.5 to 9 inches. Other people will say it's fine. Some people will say that the lift doesn't affect whether it rubs or not, some people will tell you that it does. I have the same truck as you and literally bought 285's and had them at the tire shop. As I did research, I decided it wasn't worth the risk of having to start cutting up my truck to make them fit. So I returned them. I went with the BFG KO2 275's, and VTX wheels with a -10 offset. The offset is causing the front wheels to rub very slightly at full crank. But, I'm hoping when I put on my icon stage 2 lift that it helps eliminate the rubbing, and all I need to do is heat gun the wheel wells and maybe take off the mud flaps. If you did the 275's on the TRD pro rims, in theory, you shouldn't have any rub because the offset is +4, and the rims are wide enough for the tires.

    Here's a link to a bit more info on Tire/wheel fitting: https://trail4runner.com/2018/01/03/largest-tire-size-4runner/

Old thread, I know, but A LOT of bad info here. 285/70/17 on 17x8 FX Pro wheels and ZERO rubbing. Yes I did a slight fender liner mod and removed the mud flaps. Absolutely no rubbing at all and no need for a BMC

Edit: Street use ONLY! No way you attempt to flex the suspension like this.

    Reviving another old thread.

Last poster said no lift and no bmc for 285/70/17 for 17x8 +0

    Can anyone else chime in?

I have a set of FN six shooter that has 0 offset with Toyo AT2 P285/70/17 that I want to swap into.

    Thanks.

If you already have the wheels and tires, why not just bolt them on and try them out?

I just want to check before I start swapping stuff. The wheels are on a 04 SR5 Prerunner Tacoma, which will be the donor. Just a lot of time and energy to get the thing swapped out.

You might not rub on the road but as soon as you hit a trail that’s where the rubbing starts.

None, and a week after I had it put on it went to Moab and I did Kane creek all the way to chicken corners. Then 2 weeks after that I did the White Rim in Canyonlands. Never rubbed once. It’s a really good size if you are like me and don’t obsess over what other people think you should do with your vehicle

I'm running a 1.5"/1" Cornfed set-up on my '17 Pro. Curious if I can run 285 70R17 Toyo A/T III's without any major adjustments. The outlined white letter A/T III's seem appear to be a little larger than the black wall A/T III's. TRD Pro wheels.

I don't want to be limited to just road driving. I'd like the ability to do some off-roading.

You'll be fine if you keep it relatively mild. If you rub at full stuff, install longer bump stops. You'll very likely have to do the fender liner mod and bumper trim also.

Maybe but generally a very poor job is done at the port. All the do is trim the bumper lip and it's usually pretty rough. They do not move the liner forward to expose a larger lip and then trip that flush with the liner. There is a lot more to be had when done correctly.

Now you guys are making me a little nervous. I'm torn between just going for it or going down to 275's.

Too many people assume and repeat what they hear but have no experience to back it up. How's this? This is my 2016 with 1.5" front 1.5" rear and a 295/70/17 Ridge Grappler on a 17x8 FX Pro wheel with no BMC, just a fender liner mod, zero rubbing. According to the charts floating around, this is impossible though..........

Looks just about where I want to be. I'm probably splitting hairs at this point, but I don't want to have any regrets down the road. Set my old Tacoma up just how I wanted it and 6 years later I still loved it. Hoping to nail it again with the 4Runner.

Been down the Tacoma road too. Loved the truck, hated the gutless 3.5L V6 Bought it brand new and sold it at 3500 miles. Wish they never did away with the 4.0 in the Tacoma

Go for the 285’s- you know you want them. Pushing the fender forward and trimming the bumper is really easy- It will take you less than an hour and you can do it will a screw driver, drill and utility knife. Even if you have to do a BMC- $400 here in the Bay Area or $200 anywhere else- not a big deal.

There are 2 reasons for needing a BMC Poor wheel spec, poor alignment spec. I am a dealer for Cornfed Suspension and have sold many kits to many different people running many different combinations of wheels tires and lift heights. Not one has had an issue with rubbing on the body mount because they chose the correct wheel and tire package and instructed their alignment shop to do a proper alignment. Only way I was able fit the 295 under mine is because I have the correct wheels under it. Magic number, literally, 8" wheel with 4.5" BS and 0 offset. 3.5* - 4* caster is where you want to be to keep the tire away from the body mount and clear the bumper with a trim.

I’m sure all of this is true and I went with all the recommendations above. I didn’t rub on the body mount, but when I saw the pinky width clearance at full lock and heard stories about shredded tires far from a towing service, I figured it could hit the mount off road and figured it is cheap insurance. The edge of the body mount does look like it could some damage.

They do move the fender liner forward at port.

Here's the TSB that they follow:

Interesting. I’ve seen their work and it looks like they went at it with a pair of tin snips. They leave a lot to be desired and I’ve been able to get more out of it. Here’s mine done correctly.

Yeah, I can't comment on the quality of work from every individual at port doing the fender liner mod, but they are supposed to do everything in that TSB.

But I agree with your statement that there is a lot of bad info out there when it comes to tire fitment. A lot of rubbing issues can be fixed with the proper wheel specs, alignment, and fender liner mod.

2 inch lift in front 1 in back.
    I have a 2019 4Runner. 2 inch spacer lift front 1 inch back.
I am going to put 285-70-17 tires on this.
I am down to picking 2 wheels.

    1. TRD PRO OEM wheel (4mm offset)
    2. DX4 Terrain (+10mm offset)

What will work better to reduce rub?

    Thanks
