2019 TRD Pro with only 1500 miles. I’m beginning to wonder if I have a braking issue or is this the way it is. My braking is good, but the distance the pedal travels before braking begins is what concerns me. The brake pedal must travel about 2 inches before any braking starts. Once there, the braking is good and the pedal retains normal pressure. It’s just that it’s definitely more pedal travel than I’ve ever experienced. Has anyone else had this issue or taken this up with Toyota service?

Took me forever to get used to the brakes in mine. That weird progression the pedal goes through had me diving the nose a lot at first.
I don’t even notice the travel now lol

Thanks. Good to hear I’m not alone. The brakes are fine once I get to them. I just need to drive it more I guess.

Also, take another 4runner for a test drive & see if they act the same.
If there is a major difference. Make a service appointment.
I daily drive a F-250 with a lawn trailer. I need a lot of brakes.
My wife hates how I brake in the 4runner. Unless I downshift, I nosedive.
Since new in March I bet I only have 1k of the 5k on it so there is that.
    Long story short...
I find the brakes to be very sensitive (maybe it is me).
Because of the huge safety issues involved with brakes; I would have another test drive or have a tech ride with you (vice versa).
    Good luck & be safe!

Be careful someone got their leg stuck in a lawn irrigator this weekend!! OUCH!! They had to cut it in half to remove his partly attached leg....
But ya brakes are important if anything’s fails remember you can use the parking brake!!!

I was wondering the same thing. I can’t believe the pedal travel of the wife’s 4R.. it catches me by surprise every time I drive it.

I own a 2017 SR5, (54K) a bit of travel downward before the brakes activate. Dealer checked and said .7mm front pads. Inherit to this year 4Runner. But, also own 2013 Highlander, brakes engage the moment brake pedal is pressed.

Just a "thing" with this year.

you say soft brake pedal so air is in the brake lines. have dealership bleed the brakes .
I bleed the brakes on my 2016 runner air was in the rear brakes.

The accumulator system on these makes it feel and sound different than most new vehicles. It’s mainly because 5th gens are old as fuck and well behind the times.

Sorry for bumping old thread, but figure no need to create new one if one already exists.

The pedal felt soft so bled the brakes and swapped to more aggressive brake pads, it felt better but the first bit of pedal travel still feels like nothing, is this really the norm amongst 5th gen with stock calipers?

The 4Runner uses a high pressure accumulator in the brake system instead of the a typical master on booster setup that damn near everything else uses. It does and always will feel different.

I'm used to it now, but the stupid noise it makes as I press it is more annoying.

Hmmmm, does that mean even if I was to get bbk's made with smaller pistons, that wouldn't change the pedal feedback?

Is that the "tick tick" sound?

the 4runner is my wife's, so I've been trying to get the vehicle to her standards.

Mine makes a whoosh sound that I have been told is normal, but I've never heard it in any vehicle.

Sometimes this one makes tick sound, notice it too when the car is slowing down during cruise control.

I was hoping to get rid of that dead zone with BBK's if I specifically get them made with smaller pistons.

Ours is very slight but you can hear it for the first few inches of pedal depression. Sounds like squeezing liquid through a tube or something. Has done it since 15 miles on her.

I did full brake job on my 2015 a few months back. Have about 3000 miles on the new brakes.
New rotors and pads, front and back. All factory Toyota OEM parts. Flushed the brake fluid with Toyota OEM fluid. The brakes were properly broken in and I still have brake travel. Not as bad as before, but a little better now since the pads are new.

I’ve caught myself rolling forward because my foot wasn’t far enough down on the pedal.

Alright fellas, I'm going to see if I can have specific pistons size made for BBK to remedy this.

Yup and even more annoying to me is the high pitched buzz that the vehicle emits anytime the brake pedal is depressed. I literally noticed the noise immediately when I test-drove my first 4Runner and the salesman was like "huh, never noticed it and no one's ever asked before." People.......

Then again maybe I have acute hearing compared to most. I hear the sound even if the stereo is on at a modest level (4).

Just my opinion. My 2020 Pro brakes don’t feel any different than my 17 Pro did. The soft pedal does not bother me. Even adding 285’s I did not feel much of a difference.

Soft pedal does not bother me either, but I always wondered about the noise when the pedal is depressed as well.

I had that issue on my FJ after a brake job. Turns out that one of the brake lines had a slight leak, enough so that I'd lose line pressure when at a stop light.

I feel I have the same issue of creep on my 4Runner. Not sure if there's an issue or it's just me being lazier with my right foot. Definitely not an issue with the gas pedal LOL

Pay attention to when the a/c pump cycles. This is when l notoced it creep in traffic. Brake feel is not to my liking, almost like they are off or on, no matter how i apply pressure to the peddle, the weight shift is crazy. Least favorite driving experience in the past 30 years, but it is my first drive by wire (gross).

That's actually a very good point. I've noticed how the rpm's bump up when the compressor kicks in.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case with me.

2nd gen Tacoma owners have been griping for years about the rpm boost at a traffic light due to the a/c cycling on...just something one needs to be aware of, and not let it make you nudge forward by inattention.
