I know ladders have been discussed in different forums but I couldn’t find one specific to the different ladders and what people thought of the one they had. Looking at getting the Gobi just for simplicity and cost but want to see pics and real life reviews on all the options. I’m new to 4runners so my experience is limited. Thank you all

Thanks! Yea I’m going to check that out. That looks like a way better ladder too. Appreciate it. Love the 4R too. Looks great!

I love my Gobi for the clean look it provides. Its also proven itself as a working ladder thanks to using my cargo bag up top. My only knock on it is the exposed bolts at the top, Just doesnt look as clean as it could. Im gonna trim the bolt and switch the nuts for some decorative acorn style nuts. That should make it not a hazard to boot.

Nice! Good to know. I believe this is why I’ll go with the Gobi. Have you noticed or do you expect any paint damage and running from the plates where it attaches to the 4Runner?

I use a low profile folding aluminum saw horse to access my roof rack at present. One of the items I put up there is a second spare and it’s quite heavy, so I wasn’t convinced that the cargo mounted ladders are strong enough after all my research. Victory also makes one that mounts on one of their bumper swing outs, which seems pretty strong. The only aluminum one I found is made by Greenlane Off-road and it would be my choice if I ever install one. At 8 lbs, they say it doesn’t need extra capacity struts to hold the cargo door in place. I don’t mind changing out the struts, it’s the extra stiffness every time you use the door that would be difficult for my wife. The stock door is plenty stiff enough. So there are a few issues that come up peripheral to how the ladder looks.

Nice! Thanks for the input. Yea I also currently use a foldable ladder actually but kind of tired of it and I love the looks of a ladder on the rear lift gate. But I’m also with you I question how strong these are.

Yes they look cool. But you’ll also need to upgrade struts to heavier ones for sure. Greenlane is the only one that doesn’t need stiffer struts that I’ve found in my research. It’s a nice one, too.

I bought the BajaRack for my 2018 4R and have been very happy with it. Much cheaper than the Gobi, no wait, and it is a very solid and easily installed ladder.

I’m seeing the bajarack is $65 more than gobi which I’m fine with no big deal. Did you replace struts or have to do anything else? I think I may like the looks of this one. It says it weighs 17 lbs.

It requires the use of 3m tape just as additional security but I dont forsee any damage due to this. The ladder does wrap around the hatch at the top and bottom, this could be the only potential point for scratches if maybe the ladder isnt secured enough. Be careful when installed on any ladder though as I can see how its easy to scratch paint on the back hatch with dirty shoes etc.

More than the Gobi? It was a while ago, and I might be thinking about the wait time on the Gobi vs the next day delivery of the baja by Amazon... sorry about that

I did not replace any struts - the hatch has a little sag when it is fully open, but I find it only sags too much when the back window is down and the hatch is up. Otherwise I can live with a little sag for now

And I have not carried any heavy tires/coolers up the ladder. Just waterproof bags and lightweight stuff I can strap down solidly. It is not tested for any serious weight

Ladder is super solid. Like I said, it does sag a little - I can lift the hatch all the way up and it comes back down a few inches, but I can still walk under it (5'8"). It seems to stay up better in the cold than in the heat, but overall its been great. If it starts to sag too much, I will look into upgrading the struts. Thanks

No clearance issues with the roof rack or the rear light cowling on the top of the door. I have been very happy with the BajaRack ladder. Like someone said earlier, you have to watch how deep you put your foot in on the step or you will scratch up your sled, but so far I have not put anything up on the rack that makes me put me step in past the ball of my foot

Its a 3M OD Green vynal wrap. I have had it over the charcoal grey for a year now without issue. It keeps the "Texas pinstriping" to a minimum, and I like the matte finish for my trips into the wilderness. It cost 3K, but worth it for me now and hopefully when I sell it.

    Apologies for the delayed response...

I didn't need to upgrade the struts, it opens great and all the way to the top. Very solid build, its one piece instead of a bolt together, which is why I went this route instead of others. It also curves off to the left so its not covering as much of the window as others. I do have the Front Runner full rack, no clearance issues. The rack is adjustable front to back if needed. There is about 1/4inch when the hatch is fully opened between the ladder and the rack.

Boom! Move son, get out the way! C4 all the way IMO. I am getting a Gobi Ranger rack soon and will be selling the Gobi ladder that it comes with. IMO the Gobi looks to skimpy. Pics don't do justice so I hope this video helps out about the C4 (if it's not to late).
