Question about 33" tires and rubbing issues

    Hey everyone, first post. Wondering about any rubbing issues I might encounter putting 32.7 inch tires on my 2019 Runner with an Icon Stage 2 3" lift. Exact tire size is 285/70R17. Will I/should I experience any rubbing with this setup? New to vehicle modding, new to overlanding, so any information is appreciated!

    Welcome from Canada, do it and report back! I’m guessing with your lift it will be minimal and manageable because it is one of the most common mods for 4 Runners.

    I have that size tire, and -6 offset wheels. I currently rub just a bit while turning in reverse. This is with 2.3" lift, UCA's, Body mount chop, Rokblokz mud-flaps, and 3.9° of caster.

    Your exact setup will be slightly different. One thing to consider is that they may rub in off-road situations, but not daily driving. You'll have to figure that out as it's not really possible to know without flexing the suspension. If you don't off-road, it might not matter.

    Are you buying aftermarket wheels?

    No actually sticking with the stock wheels and stock tire width, just going with TA KO2s taller than the stock highway tires

    285 is 20 mm wider than stock.

    You might be ok with stock wheels. I would expect them to rub on the upper control arms, if anything.

    285/70/17 = tire width in millimeters/side wall height in percentage of tire width/ wheel diameter inches... because that seemed like good idea when creating a standard method of sizing?

    Nothing like having metric and SAE measurements together! I wonder who thought of that one??

    I genuinely am curious how they wound up there.

    It boggles my mind that at some point there was a conversation discussing how to standard sizing and millimeters/percent/inches was brought up and everyone agreed to it. At least do it like truck sizes - inches tall/ inches wide/ inches of the wheel it fits.

    and you be surprised how many industry “professionals” think the aspect ratio number signifies a static measurement of sidewall height. As like 265,285,315, that’s just the width and if they were all 80/17 all of those tires would be the same diameter lol

    Agreed. Diameter/width/rim is much simpler. I learned about the sizing when I was a tire jockey at Firestone in my early 20's. Even then, I was probably like WTF?? LOL

    I’ve got same tire on a stock TRDORP wheel and zero rub with no cutting required. I think that it’s pretty clear by now that UCAs, lift and wheel offset are primary factors in whether you’ll have rubbing. Staying away from negative offset and using proper UCAs for a good alignment should ensure no rub.

    285s on stock rims with 2.5" lift, no rubbing. But, I trimmed the front fenders about 1/2" using an orbital sander and 60-grit sanding pad. Used a heat gun to move the rear mudflap in about 1/2" as well. Super easy.

    Keep in mind that not all 285/70R17 tires are exactly the same size. Some are 32.7" tall. Some are 33.00" tall. Mine say 32.9" tall.

    I still have about 3/4" room before rubbing at full lock...

    I am running that same lift and metric (non-LT) 285/70R17 Falken A/Ts on 17x9 inch Icon wheels with a 0 offset and I had to trim my front bumper and do a body mount chop, so I didn't rub off road. My tires slightly rub when turning the wheel and reversing, so I'm going to trim a little bit more off of the front bumper, right in front of the tires.

    I run -38 with 285/70/17. Ko2 and Toyo at3. Had to do a BMC, remove mud flaps and do a lot of fender well trimming and slightly had to shave my bumper.

    I had the lift installed at SoCal Super Trucks and I installed the wheels and tires myself at a later time. I've never heard of 88 Rotors. It must be someone else with equally good taste. :D
