2020 SR5 LED head light bulb???

Does anyone know where can I get some good LED low beam that will
Fit in the 2020 year model without removing the dust cap?
Friend of mine got some from LasFit, but went out after 6 months. They didn’t send out a new pair, but I don’t wanna go through all that. Just wanna have a good pair.
Also, any starter mod ideas are welcome as well.

 

I would say get the Lasfit 4Runner specific ones, but if your friend had that experience, then I don't know. Knock on wood, mine are nearing the 6 month mark and are still running okay.

If you look at the data, LEDs are no good in our halogen projector housings on a technical level, so some people avoid LEDs. The stock halogen bulbs are just awful, though. I still maintain that the Lasfit ones are better than stock even if they're not technically correct. The fact that they're designed for the 4Runner may help.

But with your friend's experience, maybe look at better halogen bulbs. I saw these in another topic. I bought a pair just in case. The projector housings we have aren't necessarily bad, but the stock bulbs sure are. Anyway, here's the link:

Well now that there are new DOT regulations (likely due to money hungry lawyers), it is much more difficult to find LED bulbs for headlights.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. Yes, my friend had the LasFit made for 4runners only that came with some custom dust caps, but went out anyway.
I did switch out the high beam ones with more bluish halogen bulbs from Sylvania. They don’t look that bad TBH.
But yeah, seems like no ones making leds for the 2020 year model anymore. I wish the stocks ones weren’t that awful.

 

If you go to the ones I linked that I bought, you can still buy them; you'll have to lie claiming they are for use as fogs. HR has to ask that for legal reasons. What you do and risk is on you. If it's worth $400 and possibly being ticketed, I say go for it. I really do like them.

 

So the fog lights and low beams are the same bulb type? And it fits fine in 2020 model?

 

Low beam and fogs are both H11 while high beam is 9005.

 

Don't forget, the housings are the same from 2020 back until the beginning of the 5th gen refresh. 2014, I think. They're changing again for the 2021, though. 2021 is getting LED headlights, but they may end up being the type of housing that when the light goes out, you've got to spend mucho dinero to replace the whole housing just to get functioning lights. Only time will tell.

 

Smdh at Toyota. Spent 44k on that car and got lights out hat comes in 4K Corolla.

Having gone through all this several times, I'd advise you not to spend money on LED bulbs. Buy some extra bright H11 halogens, or better yet put H9s in there instead. Then, buy the Toyota OEM High Performance Fog Lights, which are $139 from your dealer for the pair (or $240 installed by your dealer). You can also buy them elsewhere online for only about $100.

In addition to not helping you see better, being illegal and angering other drivers, LEDs in your high beams will flicker during the day because those bulbs do double duty as your DRLs. Instead, put in better halogens. Or just leave the high beams as is, cause unlike the low beams they aren't bad -- as has been shown by IIHS tests.

Upgraded halogens plus the OEM LED fogs works quite well.

The above mods are cheap and won't risk trouble with the law or other drivers.

Then wait a couple months to see if the OEM LED headlights coming stock on the 2021s work well and can be purchased as a plug and play replacement for your current housings. If so, that's a way better solution than all this shady aftermarket LED stuff.

 

Can fogs be switched to H9?

 

Good advise man. Yes, I have heard a lot of you guys are advising against LEDs. I will just go with some extra bright H11 halogens.
I already switched out the high beam with some extra bright 9005 halogens. Night and day difference after that.
It’s just that coming from a BMW with nice lightning, these OEM Toyota headlights look really bad.
I live next to a mountain and all the roads are super windy, deers are on the roads at night. Definitely gonna need to have some brighter H11 halogens. Any suggestions on which brands are good?

This is not a bad idea at all!

I have the Morimoto XB fogs and the V4 LED low and high beams as indicated above. The color is slightly different between the heads and fogs. However I am sure the color difference between any LED fog and halogen headlights will be drastic. If you are fine with that, go for it.

I would love to try out the Morimoto XB headlights that ARE legal, but the $1200+ price tag is a bit debilitating at this point. The Alpharex option seems a bit more affordable, but they give no actual light output measurements. I'd be hesitant to drop coin on that without providing test results.

Post 40 shows exactly what I purchased. I am extremely happy with the light output. I've bought may LED's in the past for my FJ, none really shined (pun intended LOL).
There was a comment about the high beams flickering in Daytime Running Light mode. This is true, but the flickering isn't really that bad, not enough to bother me at all. I have noticed that it causes epileptic seizures in others though.....*grin*

 

Thanks for the inputs. I have been hearing that the LEDs aren’t good projector housing. If really want LED, then I should get a whole entire headlight assembly swap. The stock ones aren’t meant for anything other than the stupid H11.
It’s really hard to accept these shitty OEM lights when you pay 45k for a car and comes with light that gives you 3k price feeling.
So far, I purchased, Phillips H11 extreme vison. They are halogens.

 

Good luck. Let us know how you like the Phillips ones. I'm curious to know what you think. If you like them, I might just take my Lasfits out and try the Phillips myself. I can always carry around my Lasfits as a backup in case a Phillips burns out. Not that I'm unhappy with my Lasfits, but I'm curious about something more conventional.

The difference isn’t gonna blow you away, especially in town. But on a dark highway, you really notice the difference.

Good move. Despite what anybody (or any company) tries to tell you, installing those aftermarket LED bulbs into halogen housings is a bad idea. Not because they're dimmer- in fact, they can be many times brighter, especially compared to the factory halogens. The problem is that they will not focus correctly, which is what you need in order to see far down the road. This has to do with how your factory headlights are designed to work: they use the tiny halogen filament as a focal point for projecting light into the distance. LED chips, no matter how bright they are, can't yet exist in this small focal point (they need some thickness between the emitters to provide the power circuit and a copper heatsink to mount to).

So when someone says "Oh yeah my LED bulbs are totally brighter" they're not wrong, but they're almost certainly driving less safely at night. They now have a huge splash of light 30 feet in front of their truck, which looks impressive. But now they've overexposed and constricted their pupils due to the extra brightness, and they've lost their distance projection due to lack of focus (what some call the ability to "throw" light). All of this leads to terrible headlight performance, and drastically reduces the driver's ability to anticipate and react to the road ahead (especially at freeway speed).

As for other options, installing H9 bulbs is a great way to nearly double output while maintaining factory projection. Keep in mind that these are a high-beam bulb and will burn out quicker (plan on changing them every 1-2 years instead of 3-5 like stock). You can do the same with the high beams, a 9011 can replace the 9005 bulbs. I have run this setup for a year (both sets are Philips bulbs) and it works fantastically for not much money.

The upcoming OEM LED lights should work great, if the Tacoma lights are any indicator. And most properly designed LED emitters and control systems have insanely long lifespans, so they should last the life of the truck with no need for pricey replacements.

Great write up, even though I am one those dudes with the LED bulbs in halogen projectors! Ha. I am very curious to see how the new LED heads are going to be next year....and how much they will cost for those of us with older models who want the lights. Perfect world, I can resell my current heads and maybe even bulbs for a majority of the cost of the new ones. Time will tell.

 

Man this is some one good and through explanation. I really hope of Toyota would replace those halogens with some good quality LEDs. But for now I guess I will just stick to halogens as they are meant for these cars. Maybe in 2021 if they come up with LEDs headlights, I will swap them out with some factory LEDs.
