I hadn’t realized that LED low beams were standard across the range. I thought they were only for upper tier models. Interesting.

Also, the Trail Edition is going to confuse the heck out of people. It’s hardly “TRD Pro Lite” since it’s purely an appearance package.

    2021 Toyota 4Runner

The basic 2021 Toyota 4Runner actually does get a minor update. It, along with all 4Runner models, gets standard LED low-beam headlights. The Limited, Nightshade and TRD Pro models also pick up LED high-beams. Any models with fog lights now have LED units. The base model starts at $37,460, an increase of $220.

As for special editions, the 4Runner has a new one and some updates for the others. The Trail Edition is the new model, and it's sort of a TRD Pro Lite. It starts at $39,435 for the two-wheel-drive version and $41,310 for the four-wheel-drive example. The TRD Pro has new wheels, retuned suspension and a new Lunar Rock paint color. It starts at $51,590, an increase of $605.

A two-wheel-drive Trail Edition? Awesome. Makes sense.

You just know that someone out there is going to buy a Trail assuming it's a 4x4, and then be surprised a couple months later when they discover it's 2WD.

    Or, you could upgrade:

    2021 Toyota Land Cruiser

Leading the newly announced changes for this model year is the 2021 Land Cruiser. While the standard model doesn't see any changes, the Heritage Edition introduced last year does. It was initially only offered with two rows of seats and two colors: black or white. This year, a three-row variant will be available. Toyota has also added Classic Silver and Magnetic Gray as paint colors. The Land Cruiser's base price has increased by $100 to $86,840. Pricing for the three-row Heritage Edition hasn't been announced, but will be available closer to when it goes into production in September.

    Wow.

If we assume the $220 price increase, a TRD Off-Road will cost $40,060.

A 4WD Trail will be $41,310, and won't have the locker, Crawl Control, or MTS.

Talk about paying more to get less!

Sheesh, I didn’t realize how much they had gone up in price. When I bought my 18 TRD OR (non-premium), I got it for approximately $34,500. I know vehicles don’t always sell for list price, but no wonder I see 18 TRD OR with 30-40k miles listed for mid-30’s still.

Seems like pricing on everything has skyrocketed in the last 15 years. I remember a 2003 SVT Cobra was like $35-36K brand-new. That same car today would cost $55-60K+... Makes me wonder what prices will reach in another 15 years if it continues... The 2035 base Land Cruiser will start at ONLY $151,220 and the TRD Pro $86,820.

But you get the AWESOME roof rack and cooler!

it's only a 2.6% compounding rate, which isn't very much and almost certainly less than the rate of inflation over the same period. and you have to remember that list prices and sale prices aren't the same--buyers will see steep discounts at times but the sticker prices remains the same.

The Trail is priced exactly as I expected it to be.

It shouldn't really surprise anyone. People will pay more for an appearance package.......and I have no problem with that.

I'd pay more to get a 4Runner in cement.

    It'll be very popular.

They said they are doing a limited run on these "Trail" editions though. Something like 2,000 total (that's the number that I seem to remember, but could be wrong). If that's the case, they will easily sell out.

Talk about screwing up the used market in the years to come...when a Trail comes up for sale down the road, people are really going to be confused. Especially when the 'older' Trail models have a lot more to offer than the 'newer' Trail...

I know I want a TRD Off Road or Off Road Premium. 2021 model only get low beam LEDs on the OR and ORP. To me, it makes more sense to get a 2020 TRD ORP and then upgrade to the Pro headlights for both high/low beam LEDs.

It doesn't really make sense to wait for a 2021 ORP, only to wish I had LED high beams.

This is all assuming that the Pro LED high/low lights will be plug-and-play with a 2020 ORP.

    What am I missing?

You're not missing anything. Your only challenge is finding a 2020 ORP. Inventory is really dwindling. Very low at most dealers.

Well, we don’t know if the 2021 OEM LED headlights will be plug and play with the 2020. And even if they turn out to be, we don’t yet know if they’ll be good LEDs or crap ones like on the current Tundra. Only time will tell on both...

I suppose there are other aftermarket LED retrofits if I really want LED headlights?

I see pretty mixed reviews on the aftermarket LEDs. One popular set I saw seemed to have good throw straight ahead, but it had a horrible lack of illumination even a little bit to the sides. It was like looking through a paper towel roll. And it was very expensive.

You also have to be concerned about whether these systems will be considered legal, and how good they are at preventing unsafe glare. Then there's the question of how reliable they are, how good the warranty is and how well they honor those claims. Personally, I'd rather not worry about any of that, and would be a lot more comfortable with a good OEM solution.

Last night I drove a long way on some dark and winding country roads. I found that my LED fogs (Toyota LED High Performance Fog Lights from their Accessories catalog) were excellent at lighting up the road in front as well as the shoulders, woods etc. to the sides. My H9 halogen upgrade was decent for the distance. Not stellar, but certainly not bad either. I also got to try out the automatic high beams, which worked very well. As per the IIHS test results, the stock high beams produce outstanding throw straight ahead, while being a bit poor but not terrible to the sides. See https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/toyota/4runner-4-door-suv/2020#headlights The auto function was excellent at turning them off and back on exactly when it should.

It's too bad that the high beams automatically turn off the fogs. I think I understand why, but honestly it would be better if you had the option to run both at the same time. If you did, using the high beams with the auto on/off function would resolve almost all of my concern with these headlights.

I'm not even sure I want LED headlights. I was just trying to convince myself that a 2020 is just as good as a 2021, and I should just trade in my 2019 Tacoma for a 2020 TRD Off Road Premium 4Runner. :bananadance:

LOL! Well, if you want an excuse to just buy now, see my note above about how well the 2020 headlights work with H9s, the auto high beam function and the addition of the OEM LED fogs (only $130 or $240 installed).

In all seriousness, inventories are almost zero for 2020 4Runners. For instance, here's the largest dealership in Dallas-Fort Worth. They have a total of 3 4Runners. None are ORs.

    https://www.toyotaofdallas.com/new-inventory/index.htm?year=2020&model=4Runner

I don't know if it's a supply-chain issue, or 2021s are coming soon, or what. But there ain't many Runners out there right now.

I spoke with my local dealer. Supposedly the Japan factory shut down due to Covid earlier this year, which limited supply.

I may have the opportunity to pick up a 2020 4Runner Nautical Blue TRD Off Road Premium in mid-August. Still debating if I "need" to replace my 2019 Tacoma TRD OR though.
