Yep, you can have your cake and eat it as well.... provided your a mall crawler. I got no where to go in the big city so yep, mall crawler here.
    I went Toyo AT3 based on review's.
Tire weight is 46lbs, seven over stock dunlaps. I went FN rim that's 7 lbs less than orp rims = same weight.
I never had a reason to clock my gps with the stock size so I have no idea if mpg was correct. The speedometer is spot on with the 285 at all speeds I checked up to 80. Used highway mph digital signs and gps for verification. That said I used to average 19mpg stock tire. The 285 P rated hand calc came in at 18.99 mpg. close enough in my book.

That’s pretty impressive. I’m lucky to get 17 on stock pro wheels/stock size nitto grapplers

I do drive conservative. The 20s have a dash gauge that shows mpg after each engine start. One day on the way to work I drove like I was 18 again and punched it all the way to work. That got me 14mpg

I get 16.5MPG on 295/70/17 that weigh like 65lbs:cool: and that’s not even trying to drive conservatively. That’s what the display shows anyways, and that’s calibrated to the stock 265’s so I’m probably somewhere in the 17MPG territory if I really got technical. Been super happy the truck seems to do great in the heat!

Looks great nice choice in tires, any lift on your 4Runner? I’d love some 285s on mine but can’t afford to lift it to fit me on LoL..

Beautiful!! I have the same exact color 4Runner. Looking to do the same exact thing to mine.
What lift did you go with? I also have the gunmetal TRD Pro rims. Is it safe to run the 285's on these or should I go with the FN's?
    Thanks in advance.

Any 2.5/ 1 will do the same thing. On different rigs that I've had, fox 2, bilstien 6212s, Toyota pro fox, Halo lift formerly boss, eibach, rough country and only one I liked for ride quality is the OEM fox pro.
    I may try elka

I ordered the Eibach lift a few weeks back. Still waiting. Just thinking about tire size now. For sure going with the Toyo's because of weight/mileage. Going to look up the lifts you listed.

I'm getting 20.mpg city and 22 mpg highway with stock bridgestone dueler HT's on the SR5.
I keep them at 36psi and drive conservative....must be the street tire tread and higher than recommended Psi thats giving me the good gas mileage?

I almost went with Toyo open country AT2 P285 as it only weighs around 46lbs, but I thought 285s would make my limited(full-time 4wd) even more sluggish due to the size and the amount of lift it requires, so I chose to go with 265 Falken which weighs roughly the same.

Hmm, lol. wonder if thats why my mileage is the same. I had the 265 wildpeaks before these.
By the way with my 19 and my 20 I lost zero mpg with leveling.

No. I've been running sprint booster at red 5 on 3 different runners now, even enhances stock. Goes when you want it to and never worry about merging on Chicago move or die highway merge maneuver

I get about the same with my 13 Trail with those same tires and a light foot. Mostly highway, and not too much stop and go around town. Not sure of city exactly, but I typically 20.5-21.5. I did a 350 mile highway trip a few weeks ago and got 22.9.

I love this mileage, so I'm very picky right now while I'm shopping for tires. I'm liking what I'm seeing of these Toyos lately though.

That low of a weight for a 33" tire concerns me. Generally, the heavier the tire, the stronger it is and more resistant to damage from rocks.

I'm running the Goodyear Wrangler Authority tire and in stock size, it is one heavy tire. Reduced my gas mileage by about 1.5 mpg. It has been all over the woods on some pretty gnarly trails and never a concern and it wears like iron. Unfortunately, it has a very stiff rubber compound which is great for resisting tears and punctures and for long tread life, but makes it horrible on packed snow and ice. My rig was a bit scary in the snow last winter.

I tried to find out the weight of the tires, but Goodyear doesn't reveal it on their website. Weird.

I average 18.1 mpg commuting to work with the AC blasting and rolling hills. Hoping the new 33" tires don't cause the mpg to get any worse. New tires are 57lbs each.

I just checked my mileage yesterday. 17.0 mpg. 3" Spacer lift on 285 BFGs on stock wheels, also with spacers. But yesterday was the first time I have filled up in probably a couple of months. I'm unemployed so Runner sits most of the time and then only gets driven on surface streets in stop and go traffic. Mileage used to be 17.8 when I had a job to drive to on the freeway.

Here's the FN store. Mine are 17x8. 4.5 backspace and zero offset
    https://www.fnwheels.com/store/

the Falcons are more aggressive looking but due to reviews I thought I would toyo. They handle the same only difference i can tell is Falkens make less noise.
Edit I just looked at FN and stock is in...if you want any of what they have, don't wait they sell out fast

That's an exceptionally good MPG for the city. Car and Driver reported 22 MPG during their highway test of a 2019 TRD ORP, but got much worse overall. Their highway test is a steady 75 MPH for 200 miles. Not sure what tires were on that ORP, but presumably they were a bit more AT oriented than the Duelers on your SR5 and my 2020 Limited.

I recently did a 1850 mile trip involving very long stretches of 70-80 MPH, and one long stretch at about 85 MPH, plus a lot of hills with many downshifts (some I forced manually and some induced by the over-eager cruise control). This trip didn't have much bad traffic, though there was one road closure that had us all idling in the hot sun for well over an hour. Through that whole trip I averaged about 20 MPG. I thought that was pretty good, though I was trying to get good mileage despite the high speeds. I was careful not to mash the pedal etc.

Unlike Car and Driver, my experience suggests I wouldn't get 22 MPG at a steady 75 MPH, even on a flat road. Maybe at 70 MPH. I've wondered if that's because the Limited is full time 4WD, while they would have been in RWD for their test of the ORP. Also, I assume the tire and wheel combo on the Limited is heavier because of the 20" wheel size.

In any case, I can tell you for sure that the computer shows a huge difference in MPG between speeds around 70 and those around 80. Just so much wind resistance at higher speeds. I'd ballpark it at 21-22 MPG at 70 MPH but only 17-18 MPG at 80. That's what I seemed to see.

Oh, my tires were set to about 33 PSI cold.

Not related to the choice of size, but based on your post and what else I've seen I think my next tires are going to be the Toyo AT3. My Limited came stock with Dueler HTs, which are known to be craptastic on anything but dry road. I'd really like something that is off road capable but more importantly good in wet and snow, yet not winter specific since my area just isn't cold enough to justify that. Plus, the AT3s seem to be one of the few great choices that come in the stock 20" wheel size on the Limited.

Question though, how do they track on the highway? I think my biggest complaint about my Limited might be the amount of steering correction that's needed at highway speeds. Maybe that's inevitable given the high center of gravity and wind resistance. But if I could improve it with tires I'd sure like to.

I'm linking the Car and Driver test referenced above. They got 22 MPG on their highway test but 17 overall.

    https://www.caranddriver.com/review...2/2020-jeep-gladiator-vs-2019-toyota-4runner/

PS my computer says I've averaged 19.2 MPG over the 3500 miles I've driven since my first fill up, which is when I reset that indicator. I'd estimate that 2800 of those miles have been highway.

PPS every MPG calculation I've done at the pump has been dead on with the what the computer says. So I think it's very reliable. (I've had a few cars where the computer was very reliable, eg my BMWs, and a few where it lied like crazy to make the MPG seem better than it really was, eg my last Subaru. That car consistently reported about 1.4 MPG better than my calculations at the pump).

The comparison between the 2019 4 runner and 2020 jeep is flawed. They point out that the jeep has adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, while the 4 runner does not . If you got a 2020 4 runner, you would have the "Toyota safety sense" and it would be a more fair comparison.
Car & driver has sukked for a long while now. I used to like the magazine back in the 80's & 90;s. Now they are a biased piece of garbage

LOL that’s kinda harsh. I find Car and Driver to be a very good source of objective testing and data, and also informed opinion. And I like that they put a high value on how fun a vehicle is to drive.

I saw this particular review as a kinda lighthearted look at bug-out vehicles. On its face it’s not the best comparo since one has a pickup bed and the other doesn't. So I don’t think they're claiming it's any sort of be-all end-all comparison of these two particular trucks, and no on should take it that seriously. They're talking about fleeing from zombies, after all.

As for comparing a 2019 vs 2020, you're right that it wasn't apples to apples. But at the time of this test the 2020 4R wasn't out yet. So they compared the newest vehicles available to consumers at that time.

All that said, I disagree with their conclusion because of their failure to consider reliability and durability. That issue should feature prominently in a vehicle comparison that is about what kinda car you'd want in a zombie apocalypse. Seriously, which truck would you trust more if your life depended on it?

The reliability factor seldom gets consideration in any of their comparos, and I do think that’s a legit criticism of the magazine. They do 40,000 mile tests on some cars, but that's about it. I think the mag would be better if they included reliability and longevity data in their comparison tests. I realize it can be harder to draw firm conclusions about reliability than things like 0-60 times and cargo capacity, but they don't hesitate to make subjective determinations regarding things like handling. So IMO they should at least try to provide data and advice on reliability.

I also think they reflexively tend to assume that active safety features are a plus, as they did in this comparo. In reality those systems also have downsides and there doesn't seem to be much data to support the conclusion that they actually reduce the frequency or severity of accidents. I chose a 2020 over a 19 for a variety of reasons, but thought the lack of these systems on the 19 was a plus.

I also think that Car and Driver tends to be much more interested in performance cars than in trucks or other utility vehicles. So you often see them evaluating trucks from the perspective a passenger car buyer, not someone who loves trucks. The mag is called Car and Driver, and their reviews show it.

I think that was a pretty good review. Honestly I agree with them. I have a 4Runner obviously, but if somebody was going to give me the keys to either a brand new Gladiator or brand new 4Runner, I wouldn't even take a second look at the 4Runner. Obviously the wheelbase is a downside as compared to the 4Runner, but since the Gladiator is so easy to lift and put a real size tire on, that's negated pretty easily.

The Gladiator would be a no-go for me regardless of other considerations because I want an enclosed cargo area long enough to sleep in etc., and I have little use for an open bed. Plus I like having three rows of seats if needed in a pinch.

But I'd still pick the 4R even if the Gladiator was a three row SUV. Ditto for the upcoming Jeep Grand Wagoneer, which on paper looks like a very good competitor for both the 4R and the Tahoe. Personally, one of my main reasons for getting the 4R was its history of reliability and longevity. It's hard to to have confidence in Jeep, with or without the FIAT ownership.

    RE: Car & Driver reviews.

C&D basically cuts and pastes their review from last year's model, adds a few things, and creates a new article. Garbage writing!!!

They don't even change the pictures.

The 4Runner's 4.0-liter V-6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission can team with either rear-, four-, or all-wheel drive. Entry-level SR5 models are rear-wheel drive, while all other trims except the tippity-top Limited model come with selectable, part-time four-wheel drive.
