Lift/Leveling a 2020 ORP - problems ahead?

    Howdy all,

First post here, but I've been watching from the sidelines and appreciate the breadth of knowledge, experience, and (most of the) opinions.

I am the proud owner of a 2020 ORP with KDSS, just picked her up a week ago. I have already put on KO2's (265's) and it's in the tint shop at the moment (going 15% ceramic all around).

I called Toytec Lifts in Denver the other day and asked them about the options for leveling or a minor lift. They said that on a 2020, it's problematic and they don't really have a solution as the radar/adaptive cruise control gets tweaked when the factory stance is changed.

In their words, "the dash lights up like a Christmas tree". I am no mechanic and don't know anything about suspensions/lifts/spacers/you name it. This is, by far, the nicest vehicle I have ever had the pleasure to own, and while I like the look of a 'leveled' ride better than stock, I am not willing to trash this machine in the pursuit of aesthetics. It is highly unlikely that I will ever really go hard offroad, so this would be purely for looks.

So, my question to you all: What is to be done? Did I hear them incorrectly?

    Thanks in advance,

You either misheard them or they told you incorrect info. You shouldn't have any issues lifting a 2020 4Runner up to 3" or so. They even list lift kits available on their site for 2020 4Runners.

If they come back to you with the same info, you can ask them 2 questions:

    1) Why do you list lift kits for 2020 4Runners then?
    2) Why do you have lift kits for 2016 Tacomas, which have the same radar/adaptive cruise control?

Thanks for the advice, folks. This raises the next question: Besides Toytec, who is a trusted vendor/installer in the Denver area? Again, appreciate the help.

I respect your initial refusal to override safety devices in the name of aesthetics. Good on you. Too many here bolt all manner of shit to their truck and ruin handling, increase risk, etc.

I would also like to know if this is true has anyone install a Eibach pro stage 1 leveling kit and have had any problems with the radar/adaptive cruise control.

I imagine the issues most people run into are like with the Eibach level kit, where the geometry of the sensor is no longer at the same angle of attack to the road. My coworker leveled his and had the issue with the radar. I'm going to lift mine (front and back 1.5 - 2" equally, keeping factory rake), and I don't suspect the same issues.

I tow, so leveling kits are not helpful because I'd squat when towing, and then my headlights blind oncoming traffic. Instead I put airbags (less than $100) in the rear coils to help. 15PSI with my trailer has me sitting level from a stock rake and the ride is much more controlled and less porpoising.

If you don't haul or tow and want the look, I get it, but my guess is you'll likely have an issue with those systems.

Side Note, you can have the system re calibrated by the dealership, but not all dealers have the equipment and some will outright refuse to do it. So if you want to level, find a dealership with the calibration equipment and get a quote ahead of time.

2/1 on my '20 with no issues. I wonder if it's the larger lifts that give problems.

The only thing that causes issues is when you change the specs that the radar is aimed at. Some dealers will dial it back in, some won’t.

I did the Eibach lift kit with 275 tires on my 2020 venture, no lights on dash and no problems with radar or safety sensors. Looks and rides 100 percent better.

I did the Cornfed lift. Super easy to install, but I've installed lifts on three Toyotas in the last couple of years.

IMO leveling is a waste of time, although it can provide a mean stance. If you like Kings and want to spend a few $$, Filthy in Boulder can hook you up. But if you want a smaller budget lift there are certainly other shops in your area that can get you sorted, although I can't offer names.

Since you are sticking w/ 265s, why not just go with Bilstein shocks and set the front at .85”?

I recently went this route w/ my ‘20 TRD ORP and could not be happier! The ride quality, stance, and cost are all perfect IMO!

on the tacoma forums theres a fix for the dash light up. its just a like a little shim behind the TSS sensor that angles it down a bit or something like that.

I wouldn't worry about it. Across a couple forums we had what seemed like a troll saying the sky was falling and his dealer couldn't fix it. What proved he lied is said the dealer disconnected the safties to clear the errors. Person went away after that.
No dealer is going to take liability for yanking the safety crap. Mine is @ 2.5" and fine along with 100s of others some 3" and higher with zero issues

There is absolutely no issues with the safety sense after lifting your 2020 4runner even at a 4 inch lift. Toyota just doesn't want anybody lifting the new 4runner for some reason? Maybe because they look better and have better clearance than the pro when lifted, might be scared of losing sales on pro model. My dealer told me I had to sign a waiver since mine was lifted, so they arent responsible for any issues with the safety sense. I have zero issues with it. So I'd say your good unless maybe your putting a 6 inch plus lift on it.

Even though I'll never buy a Fiat, Wrangler can be bought with factory installed lift. ...OP. my local dealer sticks a 3" level/ tires and ditch lights on an off-road and sells them for 50k.. pre covid they sold one every week, sometimes took 2...no issues with TSS.

OP - Leave your Runner alone.

You just invested in tires and it will look dumb if you lift it too much and keep those same tires.
Does not sound like you are interested in or willing to go on any trails that a stock Runner can not easily handle.
Mods end up costing way more than you realize. I went the the cheap route with a spacer lift but when you add all of my mods up I am at $4,000 +/-. It adds up fast.
Mods lead to more mods, bigger lift to bigger tires, bigger tires to different rims, bigger tires to body mount chop and UCAs, then its trimming the front bumper, but now it's too high for the wife to get in so you need rock sliders/steps.... it can be a very slippery slope. I know because I have modified a lot of my vehicles over the years.

I am very VERY happy with my current set up which you can see in my signature. But....in your case, since you have already upgraded your tires and you most likely will not listen to my best advise which is to leave it stock, I am going to suggest you install a set of Bilstein adjustable 5100 shocks. They are fairly cheap at about $400 for a set of four. You can raise the front of your runner with the clip so that it sits level and you will probably be happy with the look. If it causes any problems (it wont) you can lower it back down to stock height. No matter what, raised front or stock height, the Bilsteins will be much better shocks than the factory shocks and will last many many miles.

I'm new to this, so pardon my ignorance. Should you lift both front and rear with the same height if you want to maintain factory rake?

I should of worded that better. *maintain bear factory rake. My factory rake was 1.5”. I’m at 1 1/8” of take. If you want to maintain rake you typically lift the front and rear the same.
