If they put the Tacoma’s 3.5 in the T4R.... that would be the end of the T4R. It would be an absolutely miserable driving experience.

I would think so, too. Maybe if they got rid of the pseudo-atkins cycle BS and threw a turbo on it I would be interested.

Lack of KDSS would be a deal breaker for me on a Pro. I really like how my ORP tracks flat, with minimal lean at high speed. It’s unbelievable to drive a 4x4 with high speed performance like that. It’s very enjoyable and relaxing to drive on big highways.

I totally agree. The 4 litre is perfect. A good balance of performance, weight and fuel mileage.

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.

    Have to go overseas.
My 2014 Toyota Hilux was pretty stripped with manual transmission, 4x4 shift lever, and locking rear diff.

Actually almost all the Toyota 4x4's (non-US versions) can be had in stripped models overseas.

Lack of new goodies is fine. It's actually the reason I prefer my 4Runner over newer, flashier tech. The insane thing to me is the Pro markup- people are paying over $50K for the same truck that was $35K a few years ago.

Toyota lucked into this- with their slow update cycles, they accidentally became one of the last "real" SUVs left. But if they're not careful, they'll lapse into complacency again.

KDSS works well for me both on road and slow on articulated slippery terrain. Wet grass & muddy steep terrain it is sure footed with minimal tire lifting & slip.

My non-KDSS Off Road had a horrible amount of body sway and nose dive before I had the Eibach Pro Truck Lift put on. I live in the Ozarks of Missouri and the nearest stoplight is literally 45 minutes away driving 45 to 55mph through hills and curves. Driving home from purchasing the OR, I was seriously debating taking it back to the dealer as I had to slow way down to take the curves in my area from the body roll.

The Eibach Suspension (Springs and Shocks / Struts) cured that problem. Now I can take those curves at speed. The Body Roll is gone and so is the nose dive on braking. The ride is firmer than factory but not punishing on my rocky dirt / gravel road.

While I've never test driven a Pro, I theorize that the Pro / Fox suspension tightens up the on road handling. The question then is it worth the extra $10k. I don't think so. I bought my Eibach Suspension kit for $750 shipped. Then spent another $400 on the install = $1100 installed.

I still haven’t figured out the use of MTS to fine tune the ATRAC. Played with it a bit, but not enough yet.
Does anyone have any reflections on MTS in the real, slick world?

The PRO has fox suspension, if im not mistaken. And, it's their lower grade stuff. It's definitely an upgrade from the standard shocks, though.

I wonder if this is part of the rationale for no KDSS on the PRO?

The customer base for the Pro is basically looking for cool aesthetics not performance. Toyota doesn’t need to give the pro technology.

I think the PRO is just an off-road that gets modified when it arrives in the US. So, they probably just started with the cheapest option.

Or, maybe they left it out since most really hardcore off-roaders would likely remove the sway bars anyhow.

Play with it going up/down a hill without bumps. Just a flat hill. Just let it do it’s own thing and you get a feel for what it does itself, without “obstacles”. Then it’s easier to interpret what it’s actually doing when you do have “obstacles”.

And once it engages set the speed control or keep a steady throttle to keep it engaged slow and steady. It just keeps moving you forward. Some guys who drive aggressively think it’s a sissy thing, but hey, it’s a tool that works well imho.

When I’ve read about both, they seem to do similar things. KDSS seems to me like a simpler system (as far as parts/complexity goes and comes with less $$ risk in the event of failure).

I’ve never had either. But based on what I’ve read, I think I’d prefer KDSS.

    I believe you are correct.

I think they accomplish the same result, basically. XREAS links the shocks, where KDSS links the sway bars. The beauty of the KDSS is the way it allows the suspension to flex without fighting the sway bars.

    I wouldn't want XREAS. I LOVE KDSS!

XREAS is a simpler system, KDSS is probably better, although I've not driven it.

XREAS is cross-linked shocks that effectively creates a common reservoir. Since they are cross linked, you aren't likely to use both at the same time, so it's an upgrade on single shocks without a reservoir. But this makes it tricky to service and expensive to replace.

KDSS is a "passive" system (I'm no engineer and not gotten a good explanation from those that know) that has actuators that relax the system at slow speeds (12 mph?) and tighten at normal driving speeds. This is like a poor man's (or rich man's) automatic sway bar disconnect. At driving speeds it offers tighter than normal handling (because sway bars are connected) and at slow speeds it offers better articulation because they are, for lack of better explanation, "open" (*it is not an actual sway bar disconnect).

Your mileage may vary; many drivers have disliked the KDSS setup, but I suspect these are frequently the sort who are likely to build and drive their own $2k+ setup. Also the KDSS may not like being lifted, but I am no expert in this.
