I wonder why so many prefer the ORP to the OR...not a fan of the faux leather or the moon roof myself. :crapstorm:YMMV

No moon roof here.. I like the vinyl, but some prefer cloth. I wasn't initially concerned about heated seats, but now I want to have them in every car I own for the rest of my life.:D I like the power seats, but I could live without them.

I figured if I was going to spend close to $40K either way, I was going to get everything I wanted.

This still isn't really a fair comparison because you're comparing the price of a used SR5 with the price of a new off-road premium.

The actual price difference (as new) between a base SR5 and an off-road premium is less than $5K.

    Seems there’s a few 4R in my price range. Around 20k, there’s a 15 TRD Pro, 15 SR5 w/50k miles, even a Trail Edition.....And a modded Limited but doesn’t show mileage...

It's not. Especially since it sounds like you bought yours private party. You got a great deal but we're describing wildly different purchasing scenarios here.

OP, here are some quick points:

    • 2015 - 2016 Pro is the same as the Trail Premium, with the following differences:
      1. Pro has upgraded Bilstein shocks (unadjustable 6112 front and 5160 rears) and slightly longer front coils that give it about 1" lift up front. Rear coils are the same.
      2. Pro cannot option sunroof.
      3. Pro cannot option KDSS.
      4. Everything else is cosmetic: front grill, black valences, paint options, badging, wheels, slightly more aggressive tire.
    • 2017 - 2018 Pro is the same as the (newly named) Off Road Premium. No other changes.
    • 2019 Pro
      1. Everything is the same as before, except they switched to upgraded Fox shocks instead of Bilstein.
      2. Sunroof is now standard.
      3. New, Pro exclusive roof rack.
      4. Still no KDSS.
    • 2020 Pro
      1. This incorporates changes to the updated 4Runner platform (Toyota Safety Sense, new head unit, new center cluster, push-button start and keyless rear window added to premium trims only). The Off Road Premium enjoys these upgrades as well.
      2. Fox shocks, same as 2019.
      3. Sunroof still standard.
      4. Pro exclusive roof rack.
      5. New TRD 4Runner catback exhaust.
      6. Upgraded JBL sound system, same as the Limited.
      7. Still no KDSS availability.
As best as I can tell, these are the differences in a nutshell. Anyone please feel to remind me if I've left something out.

I convinced one of my younger employees earlier this week to not get a Tacoma, and to get a 4Runner or Tundra.

He came to the office Tuesday with a very nice ORP w/ KDSS. While I much prefer the looks and ride of my Pro.....

Have to admit it hit me right in the feels after he told me how much he paid for it, and knowing how much I paid for my Pro in January, lol.

I wonder how many, like myself, consider the OR and ORP to be the same model with minor variants and don't care to distinguish between the two. Also, it's easier for me to write ORP than OR because I really want to write TROGDOR, but that's a different matter.

Frankly, it's either genius marketing or downright criminal what Toyota and their dealers are charging for a ten year old truck with some lipstick.

Even Fiat Chrysler has aging platforms, but they're at least sticking exciting Hellcat engines into them. Toyota slaps some green paint on and glues extra plastic pieces to an identical 4Runner and people are falling over themselves to pay $10K over sticker for them.

The off-road premium is a variation of the off-road. It has upgrades that cost extra, so it's a different trim. By your logic, the PRO should also be called an off-road, since it's just a variant of the off-road.

Terrain select just increases or decreases the aggressiveness of the ATRAC. You should try it out. Just ignore the icons. Use it for how you need it. Crawl control is great if you’re alone and need a push.

My local dealership uses ORP to specify the off road package in all TRD offroads. As in TRD ORP.

The PRO is the TRD ORP PRO.

Perhaps this is different in other dealerships.

Very true - and why is that? Whether you are viewing on their site or talking to them at the dealership, it seems they just don’t know/understand the trims. It can really confuse a first time buyer who may not have done their homework first; hopefully, that homework was not done on the dealer site...

True. By your reasoning, they're all the same.
    :boink:

The difference is that the off-road has a lever operated transfer case.

I wonder if it's laziness, or they just know that the majority of the 4runner's target market doesn't care about the newest, latest goodies.

Or, maybe they're afraid to change it after all of the issues and complaints about the 3rd gen Tacoma. Maybe they planned on using the same drivetrain, but changed their mind.

I'm really curious to see what they're going to roll out in another year or two. Should be interesting..

I would bet money they have ALREADY designed and built a battery 4R. But like all manufacturers, need to get every last dollar out of every little change and does so over an extended period of years....

One of the reasons 4Runners are so reliable is they keep tried and true things for a long time.

If they changed stuff all the time, it stands to reason we would run into problems more often.

The frame they will use on the 6th gen 4Runner (universal frame for all their truck based vehicles) will allow battery compatibility, but I think the design is more oriented towards a hybrid and not a full electric.

I don't get it. An off-road is less than $2K more than an SR5. an aftermarket locker will probably cost upwards of $1K. So, for a little more money, you get the locker, Multi terrain select, and crawl control.

Even if you don't use them, the price difference is pretty minor.

If you want the locker, get the off-road. If you want an SR5 with a locker, buy an SR5 and install a locker.

If you think $2K is a lot of money, you shouldn't be buying a $38K+ vehicle.

    Just a thought.

I guess I wasn’t even thinking SR5. Rather, just a totally stripped down 4x4 T4R with a locker. Kinda like they do with Tacoma’s. There’s like $15k difference between the low and high end 4x4’s.

    Haha I’d basically like a $33k 4runner 4x4 with a locker. Wishful thinking.

Wishful thinking for sure. Heck, the SR5 starts at $38K now. You can get an off-road for under $40K, though. I imagine with a little shopping around, you could get into an off-road for about $36K.

Part of a 4 Runners prowess comes from the marriage of all the systems. That’s how modern 4x4s roll. The 4 Runner is one of the best. I don’t think selling a antiquated version of their product would do their good name any good. They already get criticized in some quarters for being old timey and long in the tooth.

When did Toyota ever offer a stripped down Tacoma with a locker? A locker has always only been available on the TRD OR Tacoma, just like on the 4R.

I just about bought one of the new LR Defenders earlier this year and then changed my mind for a lot of reasons. Maybe it’s because I’m used to the systems on the OR, but it’s arguably as capable as the new Defender is off road and if you believe the hype, the Defender is touted as state of the art. Where the 4 Runner really, really excels is in reliability, something LR never mentions. But a 4 Runner’s rear locker, ATRAC, crawl control, terrain select, and KDSS are excellent and bullet proof systems, on par with anything made, imho.

A Defender needs to be well equipped with 4 good tie downs so it can be towed back to the dealership, otherwise it's mission ready off the lot.
