Screenshot_20191021-130545_eBay.jpg Hey guys and gals. New member here from the UK. I've had a jdm gen 3 hilux surf for a few months now and I'm slowly working through all the things that are knackered on her. This all started with a blown coolant pump bearing which caused my auxiliary belts to self detonate very late one night. So along came the need for a new pump, coolant flushed 3 times and replaced with toyota red stuff. Next was a service, so flushed the oil system and changed the filters. Then my MOT was due. Passed all the emissions tests but failed on rear brake imbalance and knackered LCA bushings. Due to the current covid pandemic getting parts has been difficult to say the least and after 24 years there are a lot of seized bolts and camber bolt sleeves to deal with. I'm not a mechanic but with the help of youtube and various forums ( including this one, thanks guys) I've been working my way through it one problem at a time. To say this surf has been problematic is an understatement but if all goes to plan, by the time I'm done I'll have a mechanically sound truck.

Welcome. Always love seeing how global these forums are. And seeing the alt name for our 4runners, the Hilux Surf. Lots of good info on YouTube for 3rd gens. Look up Timmy the Toolman. https://www.youtube.com/user/mtbtim65

Cheers dude. I've watched many a timmy the toolman instructional video. Put it this way before my surf(t4r) the most I'd done with a spanner(wrench) was an oil change years ago on an Audi A4.
For a bit of 4runner history. Here in the UK they used to be called a 4runner but toyota stopped selling them here in 96 and didnt bring the gen 3 out. Instead it was replaced by the landcruiser 90 series named the Colorado ( prado in japan). So most of the ones you see here these days are JDM imports and badged as the toyota hilux surf. Theres only around 500 or so left on the road here and about the same number not on the road or as it's called here SORNed. (Special off road notice.) I like having something a bit different and with the lift and 3" straight through side exit exhaust it's safe to say it turns some heads.

    Thanks for the welcome.
Knackered is a versatile word. For example. These bushings are knackered or nah mate its knackered, only good for scrap or I'm of to bed cause I'm knackered. I'll have to choose my words carefully are you'll wonder what the hell I'm on about.
Any one know what a bonnet and a boot are on a car? From the movies I know you call them a hood and a trunk.

Welcome Sir! Glad to make your acquaintance. My personal favorite is "Bang on". You can't go wrong with that one he he.
Edd China one of my favorites. Wheeler Dealers was an interesting program with Ed on board and uniquely British. Bloody Shame.......

The corporate world always has to muck about and ruin things. I have seen the newer American version with Ant a few times, and he seems quite capable, so maybe I didn't give him a proper go of it. I had grown tired of the Cable/Sat providers nonsense so I have dumped the pay for everything pipe in favor of an aerial for basic Tele to get the local weather. Have not seen the program for some time. I will look for Car SOS on the web as well. Thank You!

    I’m new myself but welcome!
A mechanic is anyone with intention: sounds like you’re off to a good start :)
After a while you’ll have the mechanics grip to match.
I like your thinking, starting with a good base and building up the plies until you have a reliable partner you know inside and out.
Is the Hilux really a 4Runner rebadged... I thought there maybe some fundamental changes.
Starting with the steering wheel- all jokes aside, I have heard nothing but good things about them and the rep pre dates the 4play

Thanks for the welcome. I dont think the surf pre dates the 4runner. As far as I'm aware it's more that the hilux surf is how they are badged in Japan. It seems the rest of the world uses the 4runner badge. The UK included while it was still sold here by toyota. Having said that the gen 1 4runner/surf are based on the hilux pickup truck. the very first prototype was created when toyota got winnebago to convert the hilux pickup. Anything badged as a surf here is a import from Japan. JDM cars/trucks have a good following here as they are in better condition, have a higher spec and even with the import costs can save a few thousand £ compared to a uk car. I my self have had 4 Japanese imports over the years, 2 hilux surfs, 1 subaru legacy Gt-b and a nissan elgrand.
