    Hello Folks,

I am completely new to the community and need help being pointed in the correct direction.

I recently moved to Utah and I'm looking to get a rig capable of handling all the fun trails to hit while living here.

    I'm conflicted on two areas.

    - Do I buy new or used? I figure new would be better since a lot of people in my area off-road these and I don't want to take pick up someone else's problems. what are your guys thoughts on this?

    - In Utah, it is hard to find a TRD pro right now. I have read into the differences between the offroad premium and the Pro and I'm wondering if there is a master thread (I was actually surprised not to see one stickied in the 5th gen section) on conversions pro's/con's of the Pro vs. the Offroad Premium. Can someone link me to a good thread where this has been discussed? As in, the cost of modding the Premium to get to a pro suspension? ETc?

    Thanks

Honestly, you should get an SR5 and put some AT terrain tires on it and call it a day. You will be amazed by how capable a stock-ish 4Runner is. Plus, you would save a ton of money.

As said many times before, go with the PRO if you want the resale value and the special color that’s only exclusive to the PRO. Otherwise you can save money going to the other trims, especially if you plan to mod and change the suspension out.

Oh the debate is there. Lots of sillyness mostly but it comes down to personal preference. I wanted the resale value of the pro, actually liked the ride better than the KDSS (though it feels minimally different) and knew I wasnt going to be modding anything for at least 5 years so I went with the Pro.

If you really want to experience the trails in Utah, get a Jeep. Lots of trails that I wouldn't even try when I was in my 4R.

I wanted an ORP in the beginning, but after doing research and seeing there is no difference really in between my 2018 SR5 and a 2020 ORP besides saving about 13k, I went with the SR5 and now that I’ve hit trails and modded it I can pretty safely say I will never need the added tech to get me out versus the recovery gear I already have. Saved me money in the end and I’m happy with it. If new is under 5k I’d say by new, but anything over then it’s really up to you. Sometimes there is good deals out there that can make it better to go used, which is what I did. There is nothing different from the pro and ORP besides that the pro comes with a mild lift and some added creature comforts, that’s it. My .02:woot:

Does the ORP have the manual transfer case like the Pro? I know the venture editions I was looking at didnt.

Yes I believe both regular OR and ORP have the manual lever.

Like the back window that rolls down. Its one of those little niceties I guess but not necessary. Wonder why Toyota bothered with both.

You have a lot of good info above regarding PRO vs. not pro, so I'll leave that alone.. (also kind of wish I had this advice before buying my PRO)

As far as new vs. used, I've always felt that buying a new car was a waste of money. You drive off the lot and instantly lose thousands of dollars. That being said when I was test driving the Runner I ultimately bought ('19 PRO), the salesman told me that there was a '16 PRO on the lot with about 25k miles that someone had traded in. That Runner was only $6k less than the brand new one I was driving in....ONLY 6K LESS?!?!? I couldn't believe it! These things hold their value so well it's really worth it to buy new.

    Anyway, good luck!

Also , does the ORP have the upgraded sound system that the PRO has?

thanks guys for all the info. Giving me a lot to consider here. I wish there was a complete list or that toyota made it easier to compare just what features each model has or doesnt have. I'm piece mealing it together currently

If you go on the Toyota website it’ll let you compare two models together.

The website does, but it maybe the UI is not so great - as you have to unclick different categories to compare, I guess I was more wondering if a complete list existed that could be shared

The TRD ORP (Off Road Package) has the rear lockers, which can be really helpful in back of beyond. Also the MTS (multi terrain select) and crawl, which are sort of fun gadgets but I've never found a use for in the real world. Also the sweet lever actuated transfer case, which clicks into 4wd & low range like soft butter is so much nicer than any of the push button ones I've cursed at on too many vehicles. You can get the KDSS option, which I find is a great system that helps keep the wheels on the ground at low speeds and the vehicle level at higher speeds, by manipulating the sway bars. Some of us feel that this is a great system, that is well worth the small cost. It's not available on the PRO. Guys who do heavy mods don't tend to like it. The other PRO stuff is show, not go, though the colors are cool. Can always add black wheels or skid plate and real tires if you want.
Higher SR5 badged stuff like heated seats and mirrors & faux leather or third row seating, well......

I live in Utah. I own an sr5 and I think it’s pretty capable. Now granted most of the off roading I have done wasn't anything crazy but I think it’s capable of handling a lot. I did almost buy a pro but I had a little one coming so I figure a third row would be useful just in case so I went with an sr5. Plus I figured the money saved I could use to upgrade it as I wanted. I would only do a pro unless it was a special color. I don’t think you can go wrong with any model you get.

One thing with Pro colors. Toyota sold out and the 21s will feature a couple colors on a dressed up SR5... Dumb move because they will lose out on 'some" pro sales

Shift alert! My 2020 Venture came with the old fashioned shift lever for range select. I don't get much use out of some of the other goodies since I'm sort of old school, but it sure is fun to offroad with music you can hear and clean, cool air to breathe.

Huh...I coulda swore the ventures here at the dealership near me about 3 months ago all had the electronic range select. Now looking at inventories they have manual. I wonder if the dealer was just re-using generic interior pics...lame. Im all for the manual shifter.

Must not have been a real Venture edition that you were looking at. Mine is a Venture and has the manual transfer case, as should all the ORPs. From everything I’ve read and seen, the Venture is just an ORP with a few extras and no badging. Also, as far as I know, the OR/ORP, Venture, and Pro all have the crawl control/multi-terrain controls.

As others have said, I’d agree that the Pro is worth it if you want the color options and resale value. The Cement Pro is my personal favorite, and I’d love to have one. But (as others have also said) you can very easily turn an OR or ORP into a more capable vehicle than the Pro, or buy the TRD Pro shocks/springs if you just want the “Pro” suspension.

thats why i am thinking they just reused photos from other 4 runners or something. That would be awful shady to sell non venture "ventures"

If you enjoy modifying your vehicle, or have a specific build / need in mind, then I would go ORP.

If you enjoy the looks and capability of the Pro in stock form, and don’t feel like wrenching, then go Pro.

I was looking at ORP and Venture models, while mentally adding up the time and money to get them to be what I wanted them to be, along with the hassle of being without my rig and possible loss of warranty on some components, and loss of resale. I ultimately decided “hell with that, it’s only a few grand more, I’ll just drive the Pro that’s there on the showroom floor.”

SR5 well equipped will do whatever you ask
ORP with KDSS is the best ride you can buy, if you don't plan to lift much and actually like the ride
PRO has the best drive it home look (if you like the basket on top)

Yeah, I don’t understand why dealers still just use stock photos or sometimes NO photos of vehicles they have on their lot. Doesn’t exactly promote sales from outside the local market.

I did see one dealer in CA that was taking SR5s and putting the Pro grill, wheels, skid plate, and older Pro (Bilstein)shocks/springs on them, but they left the SR5 badging. I guess you can’t exactly say they’re selling “Fake Pros”, but that’s still a bit misleading. Can’t remember where I saw the thread, but a guy had bought an SR5 from said dealer with their “Pro” mods added, changed the SR5 badges to Pro badges and tried to sell it as a “Top-of-the-line TRD Pro”.
