Found a "traditional" milk snake years ago hunting with my dad, if I remember correctly the bands were more white than yellow, it was maybe 8-10 inches long, looked something like this. If I saw one today wouldn't be as brave--too worried it *could* be a coral. (Of course, I can identify them, but not until after the adrenaline goes down and one of us has moved away.)

To me, this looks very similar to a cotton mouth.

Very much so. Without seeing the head or tail in detail, probably impossible to tell. It's a mature snake so it's dark, and the color in that picture isn't great either, but to me the banding looks thin, more like a water snake; the cottonmouth banding appears more like the copperhead, but the water snake is different (or can be). But again, it's just a guess without seeing the tail/length and head, and maybe this is a plain bellied water snake too.

It’s the thick body that really makes me think this. Colors can be all over the place. The color and that thick body really just looks like cotton mouth.

yep, i've spent a lot of time looking at snakes in the past month and am no expert, but a few things i've learned: the water snake will flatten its body and head when frightened to give itself a "menacing" look, more like the cottonmouth, so it's easily confused; the water snake can easily reach 3 feet, but the cottonmouth is usually 2 feet or so mature, very fat with a quickly tapering tail. Couldn't see where the tail was, but the head is at the bottom of the picture above, so it's easily 2 feet long, if not more.

May be a Gray Ratsnake being farther south....Black Rats turn black and retain some banding between the scales as sub-adults.

I love snakes and the think they are awesome! Had several growing up including a 7’ Columbian red tail. Several gopher snakes and king snakes too.

I had a pair of Albino Gophers but never got them to lay eggs. And an Albino Burmese that locked on to my hand while I was feeding it. The trick in that situation is to keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol on hand. You put a drop on your finger and gently touch their nose they instantly release....

As a kid growing up in SoCal. in 60's, we were around a lot of different snakes. My Dad and I built a large terrarium in my bedroom and a few in our garage.
We even built a little mouse farm to feed them too, and gave the local pet stores our extras. Man they multiply quick.
Funniest thing I remember is, we had a 6' red tail boa, it was longer than I was tall, and My Dad and I would go to his work and he'd wrap Charlie around me and make me walk into the shop area. Our darker brothers would run from me and that's when I learned a lot cuss words.

Never understood the need to kill nonvenomous snakes. They are so good at keeping the mice, rat, and other critters to a minimum. And yes some do kill other poisonous snakes. I always catch them and remove them from my yard due to our dogs. But I do find that my dogs always seem to give snakes some distance.

Almost caught a Northern Water Snake(Nerodia Sipedon Sipedon) today while fishing. But it slithered down into a rock pile...

Mang I’m glad those don’t live here. As many water snakes I’ve got bitten by, “Cottonmouths” are just a little south of me...

There’s just about one behind every tree as long as you’re near water around here. And there’s water everywhere. But they’re quite skittish so it’s damn near impossible to get tagged by one by accident
