Mice nested in my 2019 Limited and chewed through some of the wires connecting to the fuel injectors. After some searching I read that mice like the soy wire insulation wiring that Toyota uses. On a 4Runner the fuel injection wiring harness is a part of the entire vehicles wire harness - dealer list price $1,100 and it would take forever to replace the entire harness. Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to repair the damage?

you have 3 4runners :) sorry to hear about your problems. how long did this 4runner sit before you noticed it? if there was a nest in my runner, they would burn up quick.

Depending on the extent of the damage, it can be repaired without replacing the entire harness. Been there.

The 4runner wasn't used for a few weeks. The SUV was in my garage in FL - I never have had any rodent issues. The pest control company told me the rodents were only in my SUV nowhere else in the house. I have had a boat, Ford Escape and Ford Expedition in my garage for months with-out any issues. Pretty crazy.

Splice the broken wires. It sucks though being new..
I had 2 fj’s they got to the injector wires. Now I keep repellent under all my hoods, motorhome an motorcycles.
Seems to work. Non toxic and smells ok

TimC - thanks for the advise. I found out you can order the pigtail connectors part number# 9098011875 from Toyota plus proper color coded wires part number #8229824421 to splice into the main wiring harness. You need to remove the intake manifold to tap in the main harness this requires a replacement intake manifold gasket part number # 1717631141. I was told you need a special tool to make the pigtail connections so I am currently on the hunt for the tool.

My step-mom’s Prius got eaten alive. $7,000+ and 3 weeks at the dealer (some of the delay was waiting for the mercenary insurance adjuster). Hired our own mercenary (local pest control guy) who “cleaned house” and is maintaining the traps/bait stations.

Dad and step-mom used to have a small motorhome they stored outside. They put mothballs in little drawstring bags in the engine compartment when they weren’t using it. Never had a problem with rodent squatters. Mothballs could get messy at running temperature since the paradichlorobenzene has a low melting point (127.6°F). Another option might be to put a single mothball on top of each tire. The tires are going to be their route in, and they’re not going to want to hang around stinky mothballs.

I was looking at reviews on MouseBlocker and found an interesting line on an Amazon post ...

“It also helps to make sure the air recirculation switch is set to recirculate when I turn the car off - that closes a flap where the outside air is drawn in, and keeps the critters out of the air filter compartment”

Doesn’t help with rodent diners in the engine compartment, but it may make it more difficult for the varmints to expand their domicile into the filter box and subsequent interior of the vehicle.

Thinking of ordering this … can you snap a pic when you get time of where and how you put this in the engine bay. Thanks

We picked up an outdoor cat at the local shelter. Feed him just enough to keep him coming around but not much more. He’s a damn natural born killer. No mice, chipmunks, birds, squirrels... our house is pest free because of that killing machine. I do have to pick up a lot of carcasses left in the yard.

There’s lots of crannies these fit into. They’re like oversized teabags.DA1EE453-401A-45C5-9386-5E72DBB0C505.jpg0A0A6CB4-46F9-44F5-8AA5-FBF13438BBFC.jpg

Awesome thanks !!! Going to order now, never had a problem but this seems like a good insurance mod. What's the general consensus on how many to put in engine bay? Looks like one on the right and one on the left side should do the trick.

Anywhere they’ll fit without falling out. Plenty of crevices.
The packs don’t seem to absorb much water.

Think I will ziptie 'em to the main wire bundles that get munched on from previous pics in this thread and others.

Bought my 2020 4Runner in Dec and found a rat in it last week. It ate through the wires behind the glove compartment. After that I got message in the dashboard ”AIR BAG MALFUNCTION. Visit your dealer.”
Took the car to Toyota and sure enough the SOB ate through wires and the damage assessment was well over $5,000. Had to do an insurance claim and still waiting on the repairs. Never even heard of rats eating through cars before until they got me!

Yep, do a search OP. Happens more than you think.
Wiring is soy based and attracts mice.
