Probably accountants are who decided this. Has to be cheaper than normal wire covering.

Ive seen damage like this before many times. I worked for Honda for years and now at BMW, they all coat there wires with some kind of oil to persevere the coating. Honda started covering there wire looms where it is was a problem with rodent tape. Its an electrical tape with pepper in it. Parking in the garage isn't always a good fix either, Ive seen dog food in the valley between the heads from people who keep there dog food in the garage with there car. Mice will find a way in if they want to. A good fix that's not poison, is to put moth balls in the foot section of pantyhose, tie it off and hang it somewhere under the hood. Not very attractive, but it does work. Hope this helps!

you would not have this problem if YOU were my neighbor... I see more than 2 country rats [squirrels] in/on my large acre lot with oak trees I put out the trap , then do the kill , then put the body in a place where , the predators eat them up..

my neighbor's feed the birds ... well they feed the rodents. I cannot quote how many every year the number amount , because it is a spring / summer project.
The hawks love my property , because I feed them with rodent food..

what to use is a animal noise repellent device.. it does work.. 12volt powered..
if you do the kill you have to be careful if your neighbors can video your kill program..
because I am in the woods I do the cover up and trick out the varmints ..

if mice are around then fabricate a stone structure put the rodent bait in there..it works !!!

^^^This is true. Weve got a fair amount of red tail hawks, dogs and the occasional coyote nearby. Squirrels cant be out in the open very long here.

I might live in a suburban area that restricts the capability for homeowners to protect their property from vermin, but an air rifle, properly zeroed-in can provide carcasses for predators so they frequent your property. This may be a double edge sword because there are times when you would rather them not frequent your property.

Nearly silent air rifles with accurate projectiles do not usually work for lots of tiny rodents, but littering your property with mouse/rat poison will actually lure mice and rats to your property, but it can be a great way to keep your accurate shooting skills up-to-date.

yikes, that's a lot of damage. Maybe try spraying some fluid film in the engine bay? I fluid film mine for rust preventative, and sprayed in the engine bay as well, never any issues with rodents. seems nothing likes a greasy foot, lol.

I just sprayed some more fluid film under there today just thinking and being paranoid about this. :D. I have never had an issue either and mine stays outside and doesn't move for a few days in a row sometimes.

mine lives outside too and sits for a few days, there are plenty of critters nearby too. i keep my tow ball always in, and every now and then there will be little squirrel feet marks on the hitch. i then add more fluid film, lol. so far, so good. no rust, no chewies

Update time....took a week for the parts to come in and for Toyota to fix it all. It look pretty good, you could tell they used standard wire to fix the harnesses (all the same color wires, no more color coded at the connectors). They did a fantastic job of cleaning everything up. Honestly it looked better than it did the day I bought it. Got it home from the dealer at 7pm(ish). The next morning at 8am (really cold here in MD) the damn thing was completely dead, no response from the remote. I had to use the physical key from the fob and unlock the doors to get under the hood......NO squirrel damage! The battery was DEAD. Called the dealer to confirm they just wanted me to try and jump it and bring it in (after all of the electronics work). Dealer replaced the battery under warranty (again, they replaced it off the lot too). So, I'm finally driving the truck away when my wife calls me. She tells me the truck is cursed (jokingly) so I went back and traded the white storm trooper for this.

Very nice!! Now go to tractor supply and buy cans of Squirrel repellent and spray it around the 4runner where you park it.

The wife and I are totally paranoid about squirrels now. It's happened twice already this year so we are taking precautions. I have some spray that is supposed to keep them away. It's like vinegar and water based with Garlic, Rosemary, Pink Pepper, and something else. It cautions that you shouldn't put it on paint (guessing that it's the acid base of the vinegar) but I've been spraying a perimeter around each car every night and under the hoods. So far we have been ok. I'm going to get some moth ball and stuff them under the hoods as well.

A friend had the same thing done to his Ford truck. He is the one that told me about the squirrel repellent. He said it works really good. He also sprays it inside his engine hood.

Scouring threads here. Our 2020 with 17k miles on it is at the dealership with $10k in rodent damage. I think its ground squirrels.
Looks like several law suits for the soy products they use are being tossed out of court
