So i found a 1995 sr5 for sale. The guy I got it from rebuilt the motor. He had the heads rebuilt by a very reputable machinist where I'm from. He did not do it cheap at all. The only thing is it seems like he missed something. It acts like the timing is off. So I checked and sure enough both cams were off by a tooth. I got that set right and put a timing light to it. That helped a little but it's still not running right at idle it sounds fine but under a load it seem like it is missing. Loss of power really bad. Has a really bad raw fuel smell in the exhaust. I'm not sure where to go with it at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you mess with your distributor at all?

We set the timing using it. New plugs and wires also.

How old is the timing belt?

Plugs are gapped right. Timing belt has very little miles on it. The guy I bought it from said 350 miles on it. You can still read the part numbers on it.

Hmmm.......well if you think you've got the timing issues figured out. Only other thing there I could think of is a bad or loose pully.

Any old bad gas in that thing from sitting around a long time? Maybe some heet if there's any water in there. Fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injectors.....for the hell of it go check all the connections on the injectors. Make sure nothing is loose.

We are headed to the crank pulley next. The guy that rebuilt it made some pretty stupid mistakes so we are checking all that also. He put new connectors on the fuel injectors so maybe he mixed 2 of then up.

Have you inspected the heads yourself or done a compression check? Not to question the work done by the machine shop you trust, but how he sealed it.

Have you checked that the TPS is adjusted correctly?

I have checked compression it's good. I have not taken the heads off I was hoping to not have to got that far tell i knew everything else was good. I have never checked the tps it's new I'm not sure why it would need adjusting.

I've had to adjust a new one before on my pickup only reason I brought it up. Had kind of the same symptoms. It idled well but would miss/fall on its face under throttle. The ECU uses TPS values to determine timing for the EFI. Could be out of whack causing the miss. Just an idea. Also vacuum leaks or miss routed lines I've had similar symptoms to yours with leaks as well.

Still fighting this. I have done the timing. I have replaced plugs. Wires are new. We have adjusted the valves. New tps and its adjusted. We have checked the injectors. It's still running bad. Any advice?

hail mary on this one, are you sure you have ignition on all cylinders? The "Raw fuel" comment caught my interest. Easy way to check is to use a spray bottle/squirt gun and spray exhaust manifold 1 or 2 inches from the head and verify water boils off in roughly the same amount of time. Have you also done a cylinder leak down test. That will tell you the condition of the head job etc. that was done. I will think on this one some more in the mean time....

It seems to me that cylinder #3 and #5 are the problem. I do believe I have spark. I'm working with a guy that's been a mechanic for 40+ years and hes as stumped as I am.

Have you replace the coil? My 85 4 Runner 22REC started missing under load going up hills...I changed the plugs, wires and cap...still did it...I replaced the coil and the miss stopped. A coil is a pretty cheap fix to try...I'd give it a try.

I did not try the coil but we are pretty sure we have isolated it to cylinder 3 and 5. That would say it's not a coil.

So some new news. We did a makeshift leakdown test today. When 85psi was put to the cylinder we could hear the air leaking out of the motor. When we move the valve cover we could tell the air noise was coming from within.

Where was the Air leaking into? Past the rings or past the valves?

We believe it was coming by the rings. At this point we are planning on buying a short block.

Sorry man... I feel bad that I suggested the Leak down but that is a really good test. haha. Did the previous owner say the motor was rebuilt or only the heads? It is one of those "Ran when Parked" type of things.

It is what it is. I bought it from a guy that rebuilt everything but the block. The guy he bought it from said he did the block. It's all good tho. I got the car for cheap and even after the short block I'll only be into it about $4k.

So we got the motor pulled and completely apart. Ring gap was 1/8inch. The flywheel bolts were bought from home depot and cut down. The guy that did the bottom end didnt know what he was doing. So now I'm looking at $2k+ so the new question is..... 3.4 swap?

I would consider a swap at this point and then take the old engine and dump it on the bozo's lawn and leave a mock Home Depot receipt.

Though the same time if the other can be salvaged and you're confident in your abilities and would enjoy rebuilding it.....go for it.

Then again who knows what kind of damage that dude did with the Home Depot bolts. Those threads could be permanently ruined.

    Swap it and be done.

Based on what I've read, I wouldn't trust that motor at all unless I had the time and expertise to completely tear it down, inspect, and rebuild.

^^^^I agree 100%! Especially the part about dumping the motor in the other guy's lawn!

You could swap but in your position, I wouldn't worry about rebuilding the block correctly. Have a machine shop go through it. They can magnaflux it etc. and check for cracks etc. Swaps sometimes end up becoming nightmares. (Yes, Experience haha)
