Longtime lurker, first time poster. My wife is looking to get a 2019 or 2020 4Runner soon and has narrowed it down to a white 2WD SR5 Premium.

Looking at Autotrader, in a 300 mile radius of home, there are 11 2020 white SR5 Premiums and 10 of them have the blacked-out badges, black running boards, and black TRD wheels, all with Goodyear tires. My question is, is this some sort of "package" exclusive to the 2020's, maybe dealer-installed?

Oddly enough, this is how she wants her 4Runner to look anyway, but I'm wondering if we'll be paying a premium for it to come this way versus doing it myself later. TIA.

Sounds like the XP package which came on my vehicle. I know they for sure do it in the southeast, not sure on your location. It includes what you listed and is an increase on price (2-3k I believe).

Thanks for the info. I can't see any of the window stickers so I can't confirm how much of a premium they're asking for the vehicles, and the closest one to home (Austin) is >100 miles away.

We're probably not buying for a little while longer so maybe I'll be able to find some more without this package eventually, then do the mods myself. Or, if I can buy a 4Runner that already has the "look" we're going for, a small premium might be worth it.

I bought my 2020 SR5 premium with the TRD Blackout package from Toyota of Mckinney. They had a bunch of them. Here is the window sticker that has the info. I am sure you could do it yourself for cheaper, but ...... overall, I got a great deal on mine and I am very happy with my purchase.trd blackout.jpg IMG_6476.jpg

Motorjock, thanks so much for that pic. That price does seem high for what you're getting, but I imagine there's some wiggle room, especially if they've got several available. Additionally, if I buy a 4Runner w/out the black accents, I'll need to go through the trouble of selling the original wheels and running boards and either swapping out or replacing the tires. Of course, selling the original wheels and running boards would offset the cost quite a bit... Food for thought.

    Southbound35,

My truck listed for $44,700 , I ended up getting it for $38,000. You are right about saving money and getting all the " cool" stuff on it later, but for the price i got my truck for , i was happy for the " convenience" fee... lol. Good luck with your purchase.

Motorjock721: How were you able to negotiate down to 38k from 44,700. I am looking to buy the exact package Southbound bought. I live in TN but am considering traveling to TX to get a blackout edition as I can't seem to find them anywhere else near TN.

Yep! Let them know you’re shopping around, get your top 4 prices and let them know you have this offer and what not and see who wants your business the most.
I email as many as I can throughout the state, I won’t skimp out on finding the best deal/investment I can get.

CD12 - please note, the info from the thread I linked to was from another member's purchase. He is in TX but I'm not sure where that dealership is located.

I live in Austin but I usually drive the Houston or DFW area to buy vehicles. I call/email multiple dealers and pick 2-3 places to visit, drive there early one morning and go to the dealers, buy from the one that has the best price on the car I want and gives the best deal on my trade, then drive home that evening . I get MUCH better deals in those cities than I can get here locally.

I just emailed 5 or so dealers looking for the blackout package. Hoping to get an off under 40k. Any suggestions on negotiating lower than the online price or quote they give you?

Blackout package on what trim? Just sent quotes to your dealers. See who beats who.

Blackout Package on SR5 Premium 4x4. I have been looking and I see there is an XP Package as well as a Blackout Package. Was curious if anyone knew the difference.

Let me give you guys a quick comparison.

I bought an SR5 Premium 4x4 for $34,000 in AZ.

Bought some used wheels for $300. Sold my stock wheels for $200.

    New tires were $800.

Can of black Plastidip to blackout emblems $6

    Used running boards are $100

    Husky all weather mats $175

So you could pay $35,181 for the "do it yourself" blackout package or you can pay the dealer an extra $5k to do it for you.

If in north Texas I can recommend the guy that we bought our 2020 limited from. I did everything via email. Painless for me but I did my homework first. I wanted to keep everything on paper so I had the numbers. Zero pressure from the start to finish ( even with the finance people ). I knew what I wanted and how much I wanted to pay and it happened in a blink of an eye. I wanted no bs. They emailed me dealer cost without hesitation and worked from there. I know they didn’t lose money ( as expected and ok with ) but I felt good walking away with a new truck.

Was that a new 2020 SR5 Premium you got for 34k? If so, curious as to how you were able to get that low. I have talked to 3 dealers today and all the bids have been around 42k plus TTF - that is for the 2020 XP Predator package though. I'm trying to be at 40k OTD. After reading your note I'm cool with getting basic SR5 premium then blackout myself.

CD12, sorry for the delay in responding. After reading the other posts, Everyone has given great info. I did my homework,( Internet research with cost of vehicle) and began with the dealership I have purchased 2 other vehicles from. I had several bargaining chips on my table, It was the end of the month/year, The dealership had an abundance of vehicles on the lot.

When I got to the dealership and saw the one I wanted, we did the routine test drive, I let them look at my trade. We haggled only once with the price and trade. They were willing to deal and accepted my offer for the vehicle and bumped up my trade to where i needed to be. It was a win /win.... I think timing/inventory surplus was on my side.

This was for a 2018. The price has gone up on the 4Runner since I've purchased, but only by a couple hundred dollars per year. The XP Predator Package offers the following over stock:
    • TRD Pro Grille
    • Black Emblem Overlays
    • Predator Pro Step Bar
    • XP Badging
    • 17-inch TRD Matte Black Wheels
    • All-Terrain Tires
So take the "do it yourself" blackout package I quoted above ($35,181) and add lets say we add $400 for price increases from 2018 to 2020. Then we add the TRD pro grille for another $300 and an XP badge from eBay ($75). You're still under $36,000. Compare that to the $42k you've been quoted.

I'm not sure where you are but try research some out of state dealerships as well. You can negotiate everything online, buy a one way flight to pick it up and drive it back home. It could end up saving you a lot of money if you're getting really high quotes around your area......which is what it sounds like. This is what I did. I live in CA and bought in AZ.

If you're close enough, try Earnhardt Toyota in Arizona. Talk to their online Fleet Department and get a quote for an SR5 Premium 4x4. See what that comes in at and do the same for the dealers around you so you can get an apples to apples comparison. If you're saving thousands of dollars on the purchase price, that's definitely worth a plane ticket and a long drive home in my book.

You can add all that other stuff to your truck yourself for so much cheaper than what a dealer is going to charge you. You can literally save thousands, if that's important to you.

I need to amend this. Didn't realize the cost of the 2020's wen't up by $2,000. My apologies.

The overarching point of my post still stands, however. You can do the blackout package yourself for a couple thousand dollars less than what you'll pay the dealer to do it. If you're looking to save money, do it yourself. If you like the convenience of the XP package and the price tag doesn't bother you, go for it.

    Best of luck!

I suspect that Toyota continues raising prices of 4Runner's because these vehicles EPA fuel economy ratings drag down Toyota's Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE). Toyota needs to sell Rav4 hybrids and Priuses to offset the fuel economy of Tundra's, 4R's, and Tacoma's or otherwise, they'd have to buy credits from companies like Tesla. CAFE is having the effect of making trucks and SUV's more expensive and also reducing companies incentive to design and manufacture them, all things being equal. However, if companies can increase the margins on vehicles like 4Runner, it cancels out the influence of CAFE. It just sucks for buyers who love these vehicles because its basically acting like an ever increasing tax on a product we want.

I don't think that's the reason, at least in my opinion.

TSS was added to the 4Runner in 2020, hence the price increase.

Plus they continue to sell them in record numbers, which = higher demand.

Higher demand = the ability to charge more.

Sure, suppy/demand curve dynamics always apply. My thought is that there is an additional dimension to pricing decisions that are driven by CAFE. All automakers are subject to it, unfortunately.

Well, regarding TSS, how much did Toyota raise the price of the Camry and Corolla when TSS was added to those vehicles?

I see your point. I'm sure there's some added cost that will get passed along to the consumer. Perhaps more so in the development of the 6th gen runners. The 5th gens are already 10 years old and have been utilizing virtually the same components.

Good question. I'm not sure. Maybe I can dig it up somewhere.
