Hey, just a fun question for those of us who either plan or dream into the future. Or maybe you’re one of the disciplined few who keep their vehicles until they’re completely dead, in 20 years or more. I generally flip my vehicles every 3-4 years depending on their condition, attractiveness of new models, or any number of other minute factors. One big factor, living in a snow belt, is rust. It just never sleeps, so keeping a vehicle forever is not an option for me. I only own one vehicle, so I have to make my decision carefully, and that’s why I’m oldtoyotaguy, I’ve owned a lot of 4X4 Toyota’s since 1980. Some of them rusted out before my eyes.
To kick it off, I just about bought a new Defender this year. I put down a $5k deposit, and waited and waited. Then, I had second thoughts, especially about reliability worries, and cancelled my order and got back my deposit. The dealer was understanding, and it was no big deal for them. My current plans, though, are to buy a Tesla Cybertruck in 2021, or whenever they come out.

Waiting to see what the 6th gen is like. Then I'll decide to get one or pick up a late year 5th gen. I've been enjoying my 4th gen but I know it won't last forever.

Or maybe I'll get the fast car bug again and go for a Mustang. You never know with me, longest I've kept a car is just over 3 years.

I keep my stuff FOREVER... My next car is going to be my "Midlife Crisis Car" (yes, I am planning it) When the wifes Runner is paid off, I am looking at older Aston Martin (2009-2011) surprisingly affordable to buy, a Hellcat or Demon Charger or Challenger, or the 2018 ZL1 Camaro with a track kit. I am ready for something new and fun that I can play with that I didnt spend years building like our Hot Rods/Muscle cars. I want something I can beat on without breaking my heart! haha.

BUT.... I will probably have to build one of the 8 cars I have waiting to be built, probably my '53 Willy's jeep most likely to be a hunting truck.

Cool project, tons of parts. That’s the kind of project that a kid who is into cars would love to be your apprentice on.

i will have this 4 runner for at least 4/5 more years before i even think of selling or trading it in. at least thats the plan. i would love to get another one, perhaps a newer 5th gen since i have a 2012. i just really love the 4runner. i will, depending on living situation and other future considerations, probably get a pickup truck at some point. either to be able to haul a bigger boat, materials, etc., or maybe even try and get a vehicle that I can make a dedicated surf fishing/off road rig.

Hard to say because there is nothing on the market that I'd rather have (at least not that I can afford)

Longest I've ever kept a vehicle was 8 years...my '06 Tacoma. I've gone thru other vehicles pretty quickly.

If my 4 Runner got totalled tomorrow and I had to choose... I'm pretty sure I'd just get another 4Runner.

Right now is the first time in forever that I don't have a project car in the stable along with the reliable car. As such, I'm missing a bit of the "fun" car. I'd most likely get a Gladiator, as that ticks a lot of boxes of fun and usable.

I almost bought a Challenger Scat Pack before the 4Runner. I did a test drive with my son to make sure all of his hockey goalie gear fit in the trunk...it did. The trunks are huge on those!

I'll wait for the 6th gen to come out and evaluate.

I wouldn't mind a Raptor Ranger if those eventually make their way to the U.S.

My next vehicle will be definitely be electric, as I mentioned in the first post, but I’m going to keep my 4 Runner as I make the transition to electric. The 4 Runner is the best 4X4 I’ve ever owned by a good margin, and I may end up with it as a second vehicle for a long time as a garage Queen and security blanket.

Our daughter is 5 and we are hoping that our current 4Runner (2018) will be her first car when that time comes. We really do like this thing. I have an older dodge diesel for hauling/towing, a Corolla for commuting. We never get rid of cars... EVER haha. That is why I have 14 right now but only 8 that are road worthy and insured.

I’ve been working on my wife for a Supra...should have jumped on one before the “market adjustment” hit the MSRP.

My dad is the market for a new truck like a new Ranger, Tacoma or an F-150 to replace the 2007 F-150 he sold recently. I'm also looking for a new ride. Wouldn't mind a new Tacoma or Ranger myself.

I would like to have my runner for at least 10 years, so no telling what will be out there by then. I did look at corvettes while looking at runners. Would love one, but just not practical for daily.

Someone said recently that most ICE vehicles will be history by 2030. That if your next vehicle isn’t electric, then the one after that will be. That is the case for me, plus, the superiority of a Cybertruck over everything else out there is pretty attractive and interesting.

I don’t know...we’re not even at a point where hybrids have taken over the market yet. It will happen someday, but 10 years seems optimistic. There’s still too much money tied in the oil industry for ICE to go away, especially while we wait for battery technology to catch up.

I have had my current 4runner for 25 years now. I'll sell it and get a newer one when I win at least $1 million in the lottery. Until then my 92 gets chugging along.

First 'real' vehicle I bought myself was a 97 Blazer that I kept up for 15 years, next was a Trailblazer that I drove for 7 before passing it down to my son. If I can keep Chevys going 15 years, I imagine my 2019 4Runner will go way longer. Younger son starts driving in 2023. Tentative plan is to pass the '19 to him or maybe my older son, depending on how things go. At that time, will probably buy myself a later model 4Runner, maybe a '20 or '21.

I need to see where electric vehicles go 1st. Illinois just passed laws to tax the crap out of EV's. This coming from a blue state strikes me as hilarious.

But not surprising, I assume. They would tax the air if they could figure out how.

I'm 67 so my new 2020 TRD Pro is likely my last 4Runner. I do plan on replacing my 2006 Corvette Z06 with a C8 Corvette
Z51 package (will be significantly faster in the low 3 seconds). I'm guessing the C8 Z06 will be a sub 3 second car and will be powered by a naturally aspirated flat plane crank engine putting out over 650 hp. I I just don't need (or want) that kind of acceleration any more.

My plan is to keep the 4runner forever, and buy something fun to cruise around in.

I've been wanting to buy a 370z since before I bought my Tacoma in 2017. I decided that I needed a reliable 4×4 more than I needed a sports car.

Once the 4runner is paid off, or I somehow find myself with some extra money, I'm hoping to pick up a 370, or something else that tickles my fancy.

Frankly, I have no plans beyond my 2019 TRD ORP.
I keep my vehicles on average 20+ years, so looking out 19 or more years is utterly foolish for me to speculate on what's going to be offered at that time.
    My most reliable vehicles recently have been a 1986 FJ60, a 1991 Ford F250, a 2008 Audi A4, and a 2008 Audi A6 Avant.
Give me another 10 years and I'll give you a better response than this.

Yet another cool thing from Toyota that we'll likely never see in the U.S. unfortunately. I hadn't heard of it, but had to Google it after reading your post:cool:

Unfortunately Toyota doesn’t plan to sell it here so info doesn’t appear here but since I miss once in a while to listen to my native language I watch some german motor shows and bam, there she appeared.
That thing is absolutely awesome, against my first thought as I heard it just got 3 cylinders...
That one will be handmade in Japan, has almost nothing in common with a regular Yaris and the official Toyota guy guessed it will be not more then 40k €

That makes me thinking it couldn’t be to difficult for toyota to do something to the 4runner for just a small edition
