I've driven a 1992 4 runner and it seemed to be geared right and could climb like a goat much better than my gmc 2004 4x4 dully 1 ton with an automatic trans. And I was wondering how the Tacoma pickup compares as far as climbing , gearing off road use. I see a Tacoma 1999 pick up 217,000 miles for 2500 dollars and was wondering how they compare off road. both have manual trannys. Is it just about the same tranny and gearing as the 4runner just in a pickup stile. Or are they completely different animals? thanks

I have offroaded in both and the 4Runner dose better in the climbing area. With the extra weight over the rear axle pushing the tires down it really helps out. Now there is going to be debate which is better blah blah blah. If you need a truck get the Tacoma, if you want it all enclosed then go with the 4Runner. Both have rear lockers, both have great reliability so there is really no wrong answer it is just what better suites your needs. I have seen some Taco's that I really love and I love my 4Runner.

I guess my question is better asked as are the transmissions frames axles and diff all about the same? I do understand the Blah blah stuff and I'm not looking to start that. I'm hoping there is no difference other than the body style. Maybe the parts are even interchangeable. Is there a place I can look up the vin and see what type of diff is in one without taking it apart? either open or locker, gear ratio kind of info. Thanks for your time.

The power train is almost the same. The engine is the 3.4

The transfer cases in most cases in some models can be swapped out. There are some exceptions one being a 99-00 4runner limited with multi mode Trans case. The transmissions are the same if I'm not mistaken.

I think the cv axles might even interchange.

The gear ratio is easy in the 4eunners. If it has a locker it has 4:30

    If no locker 4:10

I have heard of 4runners with others but I can't confirm that one.

As for a locker or no locker just look at the rear diff. Also it will have the elocker button on the left side of the dash.

sounds like what your saying is they are much the same other than weight balance and maybe the wheel base. The pick up will be more useful to me. I'd still like to find out how to ID the diffs from the vin or door sticker or even a tag on the axle housing so If I buy a lunch box or locker I get the right one. Maybe Toyota doesn't have that a many variations . I assume they make there own trans and difs over there. Where is the best place to look up that kind of information? Thanks for your time and thoughts.

I own 3rd Gen 4Runner(3.4L , 265 With 3'' lift with locker), 1st Get 04 Tacoma(3.4L, 265, Stock ,With Locker) and 2nd Gen 05 Tacoma(4.0L, 35'', 6'' lift No locker) All automatics, Ive wheeled them all have decent set up on 2 of them. Id say in MOST conditions the 4 Runner will out do the rest. Crawling, 4runners got it ez. But ive ran into a few hill where my 05 Tacoma(4.0L) will just walk up in 2WD a sandy or loose gravel hill where my 4runner will need 4x4 & locker and sometimes a running start. So its comes down to conditions your wheel and Weight to to much weight. I just Recently did the Blue/red wire mod(Grey wire mod) To have locker in 2WD, haven't done much wheeling with that yet.
