We have been getting a lot of requests for a rear hatch ladder with the release of our roof racks. We plan to make an integrated ladder in a swing out on our future rear bumper but there also is a lot of interest in a stand-alone ladder. Before we begin producing one, we want to get your input.

What are you looking for in a ladder? Steel, aluminum, tube, boxed, formed, etc.

Id like one that had aluminum flat vertical side rails, so it has the same style as alot of other racks out there. (Prinsu, SSO, etc)
Then for the rungs of the ladder use easy to source extruded aluminum rails.

This would allow the use of attachments that use the extruded aluminum rails,
and the side vertical rails being flat, would make it easy to simply drill holes where we want to bolt something on.

If going the traditional tube route, like the Gobi, Bajarack, maybe make the entire thing out of aluminum tubing?
I dont think there is an option like that out there anywhere yet.
Many of these ladders sound like they are quite heavy for what they are.

I have a Baja Ladder and the reason I went with it was it followed the body line which makes it look cleaner in my opinion. The straight ladders look like an after thought in my eyes. I think Baja are the only ones that do that. Might be worth looking at as an option.

I alllllllmost ordered the BajaRack Ladder the other night, for this very reason.
It is the typical steel tube construction, but, I really like that its more over to the side and out of the way, and "fits" the vehicle better, like you said, follows the body line better.

I’d like to see all Aluminum construction; flat or round side rails with triangular hollow tubes or D shape hollow tubes for rungs; rungs should have a slip resistant fluted pattern on top; include a solid foot resting plate at top; follow lift gate body pattern with a slight bend upwards and powder coated.

Keep us posted and can you share with us a few pictures or sketches of that rear bumper in the making?

    Thanks

Something like the Baja, but lighter. Or even something like the rhino folding ladder which can be used when needed and out of the way the rest of the time.

Also include new, stronger lift gate struts in the kit since they are required anyways. This would give you a leg up on the competition being a all in one purchase.

    Anything else?

Perhaps a fresh batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies to accompany said ladder?

I see this has gotten to the chocolate chip cookie stage but a grip strut style step would be really cool and functional. The mildly aggressive look I think would go a long way against the competition.

So is a version going to be made to work with vehicles without a rear bumper and can work on a more stock vehicle?

Yes! It's currently just set on the bumper, but it will mount to the hatch.

I believe the steps and mounts will bolt-on, the structure itself will be one piece.

We discussed aluminum vs steel. I think it will end up being steel as the thickness difference required to make it out of aluminum would make it actually the same weight or a little bit heavier.

Only issue I see is it doesn’t look like you’d be able to mount any thing to it (gas cans, etc) due to the thickness
