Tried to search for this everywhere with very few results. I do not want to go with dual batteries as I just don't think I would need them, plus the difference in price between the two systems is very large.

So...Need some advice and thoughts on going with a group 27F battery in the 4. The 5th gen 4 comes with a 24F and an AGM replacement would yield about 76ah while the 27F would yield 92ah. Not a huge difference but enough to seriously consider it. Yes I could get a different tray and go with a very large battery but am trying to avoid the massive weight say a 31 would come with. The 24 and 27 AGM's are already porkers. The difference in price between the two is $50.

I know the 4th gen 4 came with a 27F. Would I simply be able to swap in a 4th gen battery tray to the 5th gen? Are there any aftermarket 27F trays that fit the 5th gen? Please give an opinion, advice, or experience on this, thanks!

I’m I just got back from a 2 week Disney World vacation with the family so I haven’t been on much lately.

Calculate out your loads figure out how much power you need. With AGM you can only discharge a battery half way, meaning a 27F will give you 46 usable amp hours and a 24F will only get you 38, that’s a 21% gain in usable power you can get out or battery.

Here’s a state of charge charge for generic 12v AGM.

As you can see using 50% of the capacity will cut the battery life in half vs using 35% of the charge.
All in all I’d say measure the tray and see if it fits. I’d go for the 27F AGM with a voltage boosting diode if it’ll be enough to meet your power needs without severely compromising the battery life. I have not compared the sizes but I’d think worst case scenario you could run a group 31 tray.

Thanks man! Didn't realize how discharging the battery a certain percentage will decrease it's life that much. I now have some decisions to make. Thanks again.

I put an X2 Power 27f in my 2nd gen Tacoma with an HKB Electronics voltage booster to properly charge it. It fit fine, but I did get an aftermarket hold-down bar that fit better. I didn't want dual batteries and the 27f will run my fridge for 2 days before low voltage shut-off.

@WallyT4R, what did you decide to do and how did you do it? I am looking to possibly add a second battery for a pure sine wave inverter for my computer equipment.

haven't done anything yet. I usually take a while to decide things like this so I don't rush in, spend a bunch of money, and then later realize it's not going to work for me. So I am still pondering on what to do. But I am leaning towards just getting a 4th gen battery tray and the 27F single AGM battery which is the cheapest option. I did buy a Renogy solar suitcase though to test out with my stock battery in the mean time. Two batts would of course be the best solution but the difference in price from a single to a double is a lot of money to do it right.

I put a 27f in my 4r. Just dropped it in and let it smash the oem plastic tray edges down. I used a larger hold down bracket too. Battery and hold down came out of my Tacoma before I sold it. No trouble with it moving or anything after 26000 miles including some trail rides.

What is a safe weight battery, without having to worry or buy a special cage to hold it, and not fatigue/crack the metal over the wheel well? This would be with normal average 4-wheeling (not racing or jumping around on rolling fire roads). The Northstar / 2XPower 24F is 57 lbs. The 2XPower 27F is 68 lbs. The Odyssey 34R is 50 lbs.

Batteries contain acid (purpose for the battery tray?). Do these AGM batteries never leak a drop?
What about not using a tray and setting a 27F directly on the sheet metal?

    Thanks!

You can mount an AGM upside down if you want to. I would use a tray

    Nice 27F.
What are you putting underneath it when you install?
Is that from Batteries+ ? Did you buy a charger? :)

27F with the Tundra battery is installed and working as planned. The Tundra batt tray was a little expensive buying from my local dealer but it fits perfect. I had to put some foam on the hold down to tighten it up a little bit.

    IMG_20200102_102518658.jpg
Here is the part number for the Tundra battery tray.
    IMG_20191220_102259805.jpg
The new battery is currently at 12.80 volts. Should be all set now to power the fridge and everything with the vehicle. Hopefully I made the right decision not to go with a dual battery setup, time will tell.

    WallyT4R,

Nice photos. Thanks. Looks very snug, but nice.
I see online prices for that battery tray from $36 to $52 depending on who you trust, probably plus shipping.

I'm guessing the Toyota tray fits close to the base corners of the battery?
There are some $10 after-market battery trays for this battery, but they don't appear to fit as tight to the battery- maybe 1/4 to 3/4 inch beyond the edge corner of the battery.
In your opinion, would there be enough room for one of these after-market trays, or is space too tight around where the Tacoma tray installed?
For an after-market tray, they install with s/s screws into the sheet metal underneath, and not the 2 plug/pin's molded into the bottom of the Toyota tray.

    Thanks

Sorry for the late response. The tray I have has about a 1/4" all the way around. I didn't want to drill holes in my sweet 4 ;) so I paid a little more for an OEM tray.

    WallyT4R,
    No worries. Life is busy.
Yeah, I'm going to get the same Tundra battery tray too. If that turns out to be inadequate for some reason (but I doubt it), I'll figure out something else. And with the same X2Power 27F battery too.
You've been a big help. Thanks!

No problem I don't think you will be disappointed. My 4 starts up so fast now. An the X2Power is the same battery as the Northstar. It's made by Northstar but comes with the batteries plus 5 year warranty. Also Cornerman, order it on line for 10% off then pick it up in the store. They won't give that 10% to you in the store. I also got a $30 rebate and handed in the stock battery for another $18 bucks back. The $18 is a wash though, core charge. Post up when you get it in.

    WallyT4R,
Copy on all the discounts and rebate. I'm ready to hit the button and order the X2P 27F at Batteries+ online.
Where did you hand-in the stock battery?
    Thanks

At my local Batteries Plus store which is actually a half an hour drive from me. You can search for one near you. Picked up the new battery there also then handed in the old one a few days later.

    WallyT4R,
I've got a Batteries+ store just 7 miles from me and I just placed the order a few minutes ago for the X2Power 27F! Comes in next week for pick up.
I found there was also a coupon code for a 20% discount on "Auto Batteries" in-store PU (code #CDP13175) which is good till 2-28-20.
So, my total out the door price was $326, and then I'll send in for the $30 rebate on top of that, and then drop back off the old battery and get back my $15 "Core Deposit" (like you said) which will make my final cost just $281 (if I'm figuring this right).

I'm also planning on ordering a NOCO Genius G3500 Battery Charger from Amazon for $52 +tax = $56 total and free shipping.

If any of this sounds like a bad idea... let me know soon!!
Thanks for helping me put this together!

Amsoil metal protector. I think it looks purple cuz it's still wet and because of the color of the terminals.

I will throw it on the charger every once in a while as I am sure it will need it occasionally. I did the same with the stock battery and use a CTEK 7002 charger (not a noco). You can see the plug for it in the pic. Also have a Renogy solar suitcase when away from power to supplement the battery while camping.

Do you have to unhook the trucks battery cables when you do this? Or can you just clip the charger right onto the cables?

See the plug with the three orange lines on the back side of the battery in my pic of the battery? That is the plug for the charger. That plug came with the charger. Simply plug the charger into any power plug and then connect the charger to that plug that is permanently mounted to the battery. Quick and simple.
