Good! Thanks for reporting it. I’m encouraging everyone to, I think the more reports the faster it will get fixed. I am going to reach out to my contact at Apple after the new year and ask for another update. Last time I spoke to her she said they wanted it to be fixed by the new year so I am really hoping that’s the case!

I will update here after I hear back from her!

I just downloaded and installed the iOS 13.3.1 beta and the problem still exists. At this point i'm losing hope that this is going to be fixed anytime soon. Seems more likely to need to come from Toyota rather than Apple. Plenty of people with older phones running iOS 13 have no issues.

I got a bit upset today after the Beta didn't work and called Toyota about the issue. Got a new case number and escalation to a Multi-media manager (who is supposed to call me back Monday). The guy I spoke with was very nice but he didn't have any idea of the problem and hadn't heard of it before. I did have it documented by the Toyota dealer so they had verification of the issue. I also submitted a bug report via Apple's Beta program. Added benefit to that is that Apple is actively looking at those before they go public with the next release. I was able to reproduce the issue and time stamp it and send logs to Apple. Maybe we'll get some movement. Overall i'm not hopeful but will continue to push. This stuff should work.

EDIT: If you don't mind a bit of danger I would recommend enrolling in Apple's public beta system. You'll get the updates and ability to submit feedback directly to them. Download the beta, make a call, then submit feedback with the new App (called Feedback) associated with the beta. The more bugs they get related to the issue the more seriously they will take it.

I’m not having any issues with my apple 7plus. That’s why I’m holding off to upgrade to the XSMax. I never buy the newest phone out because of this. It sucks but it happens. You just have to wait till there is a fix. It will happen eventually.

Sorry to disagree but that is just a poor approach. The iPhone 11 works just fine on many other vehicles that are even older than the 4Runner. iOS13 and the iPhone 11 are listed as compatible and there is a justifiable expectation that they should work. Having to use a phone that is 5+ generations old is not a reasonable "fix" to the problem. Glad yours if working for you though.

No I do agree they should work if it works with other vehicles. But it could be awhile till they figure out the problem. Not everyone has the newer phones. So if there is a lot of Toyota 4Runner owners still with the older phone it could take awhile with people complaining about the issue.

Someone just commented on my YouTube video of this problem with this:

“13.3 Software update along with deleting the Car from your phone on Apple Carplay and deleting the phone from your car then plug it back in will fix this issue. Worked on Toyota Tundra TRD Pro 2020.”

this unfortunately did not fix my issue on my 4Runner but all are welcome to try this and see if it works for you and report back!

Alright all, good long update here that will probably bum you out.

I have a case open with Toyota #1912280261 If anyone wants to use it as reference when they call in. They got on my local dealer for doing nothing to fix my issue (Toyota corporate just doesn't understand what we are talking about without seeing it in action). I stopped by my dealer today and worked directly with the service manager. He validated the issue in my car, then we went to some other new 4Runners on the lot. Here is where things take a turn for the worse (for us). 2 other 4Runners (SR5-Premium & Limited) both work fine. No issues at all. Based on that we did a bit more trouble shooting. My radio has the following software versions.

I could check for updates and it said everything was up-to-date. We then checked the versions on the SR5 that did work, and there was a more updated audio version.
This one also said it was the most up-to-date. He thought this was weird so he went and checked their system and he said that he did have a software update. Now I have this.

And it doesn't work for me still. Could it be that the software 1021 works and the 1035 doesn't? Maybe. He isn't able to install the update on the vehicle on the lot, or he won't at least. He stated that he could only do the update if there was a complaint once someone buys it. He also said that the update 1021 was no longer available as Toyota deletes the old from the system when a new one is release. So, the scoop is, either they fixed it and messed it back up again OR there is a bad batch of head units that just aren't going to work. One thing to know for sure, it's not the iPhone, at least not in particular. Anyone having issues that can get their hands on an older phone should try it out and see if any work. I don't know anyone with an iPhone 7 or older.

Good work Drababan! I am going to send this over to the contact at Apple so they are aware as well. Eitherway, I refuse to accept that there’s just a bad batch of head units that just won’t work with this. This is a major issue that NO other vehicle is experiencing. This absolutely has to get fixed or they are opening themselves up to a serious issue.

I too, have a Apple and Toyota case number. I just checked my radio update and it is the latest one per my vehicle advising it is up to date.( audio #1021). My vehicle is a SR5 Premium. I am using an Iphone 11 with the latest update and using the supplied Apple charging cord.

I plugged my phone in, started Apple Carplay and just called my son ( inside the house) and got the same,,, cutting in/out,, frozen screen, call timer frozen.

Still hooked up to Carplay, I thought id send him a voice text. No issues as this has not been the problem.

I then tried to make another phone call still hooked up to Carplay,,,,,,,,, unbelievably , I had no issues, crystal clear, not frozen up. What the heck????

I returned inside to type this up and wanted to see if I could repeat the issue.... Went back to the garage,, started my vehicle and repeated the process.... No issues on text,,, made another phone call. Crystal clear voice, but did notice the call timer was somewhat catching up to real time,,,but, the screen didnt freeze up this time. I dont get it!!!

I have been experimenting with our other vehicles that have Carplay with my iphone 11 and guess what,,, no issues at all . 2018 Subaru Outback and 2019 Tahoe.

    Very frustrating

Thanks for the updates guys. More things to try. I would call in to Toyota and have your cases reference mine. The service manager included all the info in his report along with a video of the issue. Once I started telling them they were going to fix this or they were going to have to take this car back they started taking me seriously. The service manager also told me that he has a guy with a 2019 Tacoma whose bluetooth doesn't work and he's been waiting 3 months for a new head unit. I jokingly told him if that was the case they'd be pulling one out of the new cars on the lot for me. I'm not messing around with them though. Either they are going to fix this or they are going to be getting the truck back as a lemon.

Got a text message back from the Service Manager last night. Toyota Engineering has instructed him to replace my head unit. Waiting on an ETA for replacement. I talked to my Toyota case manager prior to his text and she said that the case he was referring to was different than her's. He was opening up and updating a case with Toyota Engineering directly. Apparently their only idea to fix the issue was a replacement unit. The wait for a fix continues. I would suggest ANYONE having this issue to get it documented at the dealership. Ask to speak directly with the service manager and make him/her go around with you to validate what you are seeing.

Let us know if replacing it fixes it. I hope it does but I have a feeling it’s a bigger issue than just replacing the head unit.

I just can’t fathom why they can’t figure this out, unless they just aren’t really paying much attention to it and making it seem like they are. This is a major design flaw.

That's just it, nobody is making a fuss over it. People will come on here and on reddit and quickly complain or say me too but nobody is actually engaging with Toyota or their local dealer to get this fixed. Go to the dealership, make the service manager engage with you and go vehicle to vehicle and test/document the results. If you have a case with Toyota what are they doing? My case manager was very proactive in trying to get a resolution. She was calling the dealership to see what if anything they had done and the local dealer rep to get him involved. If your not doing that then they (Toyota) aren't doing anything.

I know what you mean. When I first brought this issue here, we got a ton of people with the same issues and I thought “this was great! All this exposure means it’ll get fixed faster!” And here we are two months later with almost no headway.

I just emailed the contact at Apple who first approached me on this issue and asked for an update. Last she said was that Apple was still working closely with The engineers at Toyota. Somethings gotta give, it’s been two months now that it’s been reported.

Today is the day, I'm buying a 2020 4Runner SR5 Premium! Going the dealer at Noon so I'll bring my iPhone 11pro cable and try it out. Any advice other than don't buy? I have a 2002 4runner SR5, 118,000 miles, that I'm letting my grandson, who is about to become legal driving age, drive. I debated on wether to buy at all since my 2002 runs great and I love it. But I heard that Toyota is coming out with a new generation in 2021 with a smaller engine. Anyone hear about that? So want to buy the 2020. Call me silly but I want an even year vehicle.

Be sure to test out making phone calls through CarPlay. That is the only issue we are having. Personally, if I could rewind to November, I would buy a TRD Pro over my SR5 premium. Not that I want the "off roading" feature but because there are a few items I do want that are only available on that trim. Particularly the "remote connect" which provides remote start and lock/unlock from your phone. Also automatic headlights. Not to mention i already planned and have started to update the looks of mine to come closer to the TRD Pro (TRD wheels, heritage grill, blackout badges, LED fog lights).

Hi Drababan Does the TRD Pro have a bit more of a rougher ride? Also I talked with my mechanic yesterday and he said TRD Pro Premium and the Limited had issues with something (can't remember) leaking at 50,000 miles. I think it was transfer case? Maybe because 4 wheel drive is on all the time? Not sure but he says it's a $3200 job to fix. I can call him on Monday and ask again. But I'm kinda in love with the SR5P. The dealer has 2 lined up for me to see today.

I doubt the ride is any rougher. There is a difference in feel though, if you can I would take one for a ride. TDR Pro does not have full time 4wd (I believe that is only on the limited). Either way it is nothing that an extended warranty can't handle. Got mine with a 7/100,000 for an extra $1500.

I have been calling Toyota for quite a while and no resolution..very frustrating. Finally had a change to go to the dealership today. Dealer did an updated and but the issue is still there. They ended up keeping the 4Runner so they can call Toyota and figure this out.

This is the only way we are going to get resolutions on this. Calling corporate and never actually working with the dealership is like leaving a negative Yelp review. People see it but there isn't anything they are actually going to do about it. When you go back be sure to try your phone and cable on other cars on the lot otherwise they'll try to point to your device or Apple as the problem.

We actually did pull up a different 4Runner in the service bay, and it had the same issue also.

Yes, it was a 2020 TRD Off-road, it had the same issue. Let's see what they come up with.

Just got a call from the dealer. They spoke to the engineers. Nothing really new...according to them its a known issue with the software in the iPhone. Just have to wait until Apple releases new software.

Yeah, I wouldn't accept that at all. We know for sure that isn't the case. The phone works just fine on other vehicles including the 4Runner. My Service Manager worked with Toyota Engineering and showed them all the evidence and they told him to replace the head unit. I would go back and test multiple vehicles on the lot with your phone and cable and show them it's the head unit in the 4Runner, not the phone. I can tell you for sure the next Apple update doesn't fix it. I'm already using the beta of 13.3.1.

Did replacing the radio fix the issue for you? We tested another 4Runner on the lot and it was having the same issue.
