What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Weather tech. They have 2. Since they are local to me I tried both. They have a stick on flush mount. The fit was not great, so I went with the bolt on. Simple install with 6 screws. AVS makes one similar, I like this one as the name peels right off and does not leave a mark
Edit, weather tech uses a Ford in there picture so probably same manufacturer

 

They do go on top of the top hat so no need to disassemble the coil over. We ended up not installing them. They may go on after the tires get installed but not sure yet. They are still available if you want them.

 

I appreciate the response, thank you. I'm still trying to decide whether to use these spacers or Eibach shocks @ .86. I've done spacer lifts on Jeeps in the past, but in those cases, they were a bit simpler to install, with a direct 1:1 lift amount. If you put the Cornfed spacer on top of the top hat, what is the process of removing the top hat? Sorry for all the seemingly ignorant questions...4R suspension is a bit of a mystery to me...I do have an inquiry in to Cornfed as to whether they have a set of installation instructions available so I'd know what to expect.

 

Drove almost 600 miles over four days traveling for various Thanksgivings. Got up to 19.6 mpg on the first leg of the trip which was nice. Really really enjoy the ride of my 4runner!

Put a lot of dirt/grime on the Runner. Made a quick weekend trip to Crested Butte from Denver. 525 miles or so total. I've stopped checking gas mileage, but it was a tank and a quarter-third or so. Went from 6000 feet at the house to 11,300 over Monarch Pass. Snow, rain, ice, negative temps, wind. The 4Runner was great. No problems with AT3W's - great traction. Didn't need 4WD much except on the icy roads from Gunny to CB.

 

I’ll get around to it. I’m sitting in Baymurat, Uzbekistan for the next 9 days and only have coin-slot dial-up internet in the hotel lobby and limited cell signal (on the hotel roof).

 

There is no removal of the top hat. There are 3 nuts on top of the coil over and 1 bolt on the bottom. Remove the lower bolt, remove the 3 upper nuts, drop the whole thing down, put the spacer on top, bolt it back up. The spacer sandwiches between the top hat and the shock seat pretty much like a coil spacer on anything else but there is no disassembly of the coil over needed. You may have to unbolt the lower ball joint which is 2 bolts and you may have to unbolt the sway bar link which is 1 nut. I've lifted many Jeeps in the past and many 4Runners more recently. 4Runner is easier IMO.

 

Bilstein 6112s set on 5th notch for 2.4” lift up front, Bilstein B12 36-281817s rear springs with 5160s in rear for 1” lift, KO 275/70/17s. Turned out exactly how I wanted for level, rides very nice.

They are 'bolt' on, pretty simple install. The are by Bushwhacker. All the bolting/screws are inside the wheel well

 

It’s a Greenlane Off Road aluminum hidden winch bumper. They are a company in British Columbia that specialize in aluminum products. I have their sliders also. Pretty good company, I helped them a little on the prototype for the bumper, they do pretty good discount sales now and again. Think they are doing a 10% off right now. Shipping to US wasn’t a problem and they convert to American dollars, the prices on their site are Canada dollars.

First world problems

 

Both 91 and 135. Wish it was 91 only. Current trip is 91. We don’t charter much as the owner is very selective over who gets to use the plane.

This place is first world compared places like Sierra Leone. At least I’m not at risk of getting dead for being outside. On a lighter note, drank some vodka last night with a couple of Russian soldiers. Super cool guys and they can definitely handle large amounts of potato liquor.

 

Looks great. How is the ride compared to stock? I am looking to do almost exactly the same set up with 6112s, 5160s, but I want to keep some rake so looking at a 2" rear spring. Did you do UCAs? I am looking at the SPCs. Do you think you could go up to 285s with the suspension the way it is? I don't want to do a BMC but would like 285s.

285s fit completely stock if it's a street truck. Trimming is based upon 2 things, period. Wheel selection and intended use. Nothing else matters in this department.

 

Fuck that shit hole. Went there last year for a week. I’ll do everything in my power to avoid that place going forward.

 

Really, that's good to know. So if I am going with wheels that are pretty close to stock (Method 701s) and my truck is used mainly for camping, fire roads and gun range I shouldn't have an issue?

The ride is much improved, no nose dives on braking, very worth the upgrade. I did not do UCAs, had no issues getting a good alignment. I would say you would not be good with 285s, from what I have read even with a 3” lift some have been doing BMC, I had to heat up the fender liner and pin it to the forward bolt, I have Rokblokz flaps that are smooth so no rubbing there. Guess it would all depend on what off set and back spacing you have on your wheels, but my opinion you would have to do some cutting. Probably a few others on here could chime in that have fit the 285s.

 

17x8 with 4.5" back spacing and 0 offset is the magic number for the 5th gen. You will have to remove front mud flaps and do the fender liner mod. Besides that, you "should" be fine. The tire you pick will play a part and the road condition will also of course play a part. Is it simply a dirt road or is it rutted and full of rocks you have to flex over? Keep in mind, bump stops can make a big difference also. You may limit up travel but you still have plenty of down travel. Here's mine 2 weeks after I bought it totally stock with FN Wheels FX pros and 285/70/17 KO2s

I went from that to this. 1.5" lift front and rear with 295/70/17 Ridge Grapplers. No rubbing, no issues at all. I did however hate these tires and I removed them after about 6000 miles. Worst tire I have ever had in terms of wet performance.

 

Looks great! I have the same color and plan on going with a bronze wheel. Most likely Method 701 which is 0 offset, 4.5 backspace or the SCS Rays 10 which is -10 offset with 4.5 backspace.

 

Here's where I am at now. 2.5" front, 2" rear, same wheels, 295/70/17 Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 They are decent tires. Not as good in the rain as the Falken Wildpeak AT3W I ran for a little while but not as bad at the Ridge Grapplers. Overall I like them but I do take it a little extra easy in the rain. Not sure how they are in snow since I put them on in March so no experience yet.

 

285/65/18 with BFG KO2's
Wheels are Fuel Beast 18"x8.5, 4.5 back sp and -0 offset... slight rub in full reverse, had to trim bumper/liner mod... good to go now
The wheels area bronzish... depends on how you see them in the light. I sure like how they look with this color rig.

 

Being a street truck doesn't necessarily mean it won't rub. most people who rub do so even on pavement when turning.

People with the same exact setups even have different outcomes sometimes. Not all tires listed as the same size are in fact the same size either.

A bad alignment can make 265s rub with stock wheels. An alignment done right can even stop a negative offset wheel from rubbing, to an extent.

Unfortunately wheel selection and intended use are not the only deciding factors... Tire selection, alignment, weight, offset, even small differences in stock suspension all play a role.

 

In general you are correct. I did note tire selection and wheel selection will make a difference. 285 KO2 is smaller than a 285 Ridge Grappler, there are definitely big differences between brands and with body on frame there will be differences in body alignment on said frame. Either way, ?x8 with 4.5" BS and 0 offset offers the best chance of not having rubbing issues. Wheel diameter is not a factor, wheel width, back spacing, and offset play a huge part. Street vs trail absolutely makes a big difference as well. My 285s didn't rub stock when street driven but I would never try and stuff them off road. I would destroy everything under there lol.

 

Yep. I avoided offroading when I first got my 285s because I was rubbing on road, on any sharp turn. I knew I'd damage some stuff off-road. But my wheels are also 8.5" wide with -10mm offset.

I only really needed my bumper trimmed a very little to stop the on road rubbing... But went ahead and trimmed a little extra plus did the fender liner mod and a body mount chop just to be safe since I go off-road often... And after these tires I may want to try 285/75 or 295s and wanted to be prepared.

And I agree diameter is not a real factor, that's why people can get the taller 255s on with way less issues.
