Wax attracts dust more than non waxed/old paint?

2020 SR5 PREMIUM. GREY Metallic.

My 4 runner gets dusty quick holy... On its 1st wash by me i washed it and used wax as you dry. Good product by turtle wax. Leaves a good wax coating and color comes alive specially with a quick light buff of thick plush new micro fibers. Yes I know not a TRUE WAX COATING but makes water bead very good. I live in the city away from mountains. In 6 days it is dusty. Does the wax coating attract/retain more dust than non waxed cars? Am i creating static charge with the wax? Im thinking of using the wax as you dry every other wash I do. My 1st new darkest colored vehicle ive ever had. Paint looks and feels like Toyota upped their game on making the paint/clear coat thicker. Or maybe I got lucky.

My older 02 tundra was white and very very thin paint.

 

Or maybe i notice it more because darker color...

Grey metallic comes alive though after i wash it.

The guys on the detailing forums hate the California Dusters. They think they create swirls. But I LOVE the Cali Dusters. No, you don’t scrub the paint with the duster. You gently move the loose strands across the surface. The weight of the duster isn’t on the surface. Just the loose strands. Hold it a couple inches over the surface, and let the oily yarn do it’s thing. It’s more gentle than drying after a wash when used correctly. I use mine every other day. For years. No swirls from the duster.

 

Those dusters are awesome.

Get one of those, wash your truck and then wipe it down every evening until it's just not practical to do so (if your truck gets muddy, water spots, ect.....). You will be able to go a lot longer between washes.

 

I use a synthetic wax .. liquid clear .. works very good long life. my 24 yr old black sedan still looks very good.
I never used a duster brush .. particles will create scratches rock debris ..
my vehicle gets dusted up I give it a water spray to remove the debris.. the syn wax works good so the particles slide off easy.. using a wash micro pad if it drags slightly then I do the syn wax job..

 

I live on a short gravel lane and have had white vehicles that live in the garage when they’re home. Every couple of weeks I needed to clean them. Fast forward a few years and my new wife comes along sporting a black Pontiac G6. Same gravel lane, same garage (my Chevy G van got evicted to the driveway). After about 3 days, it looked like we needed 4 wheel drive to get through the dust that appeared to have settled on Black Beauty. In reality, the dust was the same as on my white vehicles, it’s just that it was more visible on the darker surface. That’s why I bought a silver ORP. I find that the pearlish color of the light silver does wonders to camouflage the dust. The light color also greatly improves the effectiveness of the A/C in the sunny southwest summers.

 

Wow you folks are well..... picky..... I wash mine every 4-5 weeks whether it needs it or not and no wiping in between.

 

I wash mine weekly... At the touchless automatic wash. It's not as good as hand washing, but I live in an apartment so I don't really have anywhere to do it. And, I'm lazy.

I use the car duster on the interior as well when it gets dusty. Those things are great!

 

Every 2 weeks for me. Car duster sounds like you could potentially use standing dirt dust as sand paper on clear coat. Maybe a small blower...

 

I "invested" $350(ish) in a car dryer maybe late July / early August it's literally been out of the box once just to see how it works.

 

I use a air compressor to clean up the engine .. have a 2ft spray wand . cleans up the upper intake manifold .. this time of year rodents will dump acorns on the engine ..works good ..then I put some irish spring soap slivers in the engine area.. keeps the critters out..

 

rodents do not like the mint smell of the irish spring soap.. works good .. I also use it on my plants that the deer love to chew up.. one year in spring my hosta perennials looked like they where weed whacked.. put the soap chips on those plants and the deer got very angry .. no more damage ..

got to be more concerned about rodents than dust..check the HVAC filter ...

 

dryer sheets do work but not for a month or so.. the soap works longer..

 

I’m not a fan of the duster to start. I’m weird and I put 5 coats of wax at a time. I’ve detailed cars for years. I used a cleaner wax, Clay bar and a special hand glaze but the final coat it the trick. It’s called colinite 845. It’s a helicopter / boat gel type wax and dust does not stick as much when I put it one. Amazon sells it as well as body shop supply stores.

I’ve used this on every vehicle since 2006 or so. I will never use anything different as long as it’s available.

I wash my 4Runner as often as I can, but it’s still every 2 weeks max. I think I’m at 6 weeks as of right now because it’s been raining on my days off.

 

You may have been the one who put it on here. I saved it and just ordered some yesterday. Can’t wait to try it.

hahahaha!! No!! I wash it MAX every two weeks. Lol. I wax it every 3 months. So in March, June, September, December. Collinite is easy to apply and remove so it’s an extra 20-30 min or so. I do aerospace 303 at the same time

 

It’s fantastic. Just needs to be applied more often than most

 

I'm a big fan of the Cali Duster and have used it for many years. After dusting, I give the threads a quick 2-3 strokes with the vacuum in case there is anything loose in the treads. The smaller interior duster, along with the dusting tool on the vacuum works great on the dash, console, etc. The smaller one is also the best household duster I've ever used. And one or two swipes across your laptop seems to pick up all the dust, even between the keys. I kept one of the small dusters at the office. People were always borrowing it. LOL

I wax my vehicles 2-3 times a year using a power buffer and good quality carnuba wax. And strip the old wax off and re-apply once a year. Of course, the 4R being garaged helps a whole bunch.

I've done this experiment. I'll wax a strip along the side where the sticks are most likely to drag, but not the entire truck because I'm lazy/in a hurry. During the trip, the amount of dust that strip collects is very noticeable, like stupid looking. Maybe it makes it easier to rinse off afterwards?

 

It is amazing to me that people still use waxes nowadays. Though it has some properties that are appealing (glow, the fun of applying, the nostalgia), it is, in my opinion, akin to using a grocery store paper bag to pack your luggage in on a trip to Hawaii. To each their own, though.
