KDSS indicator light on already

Sounds like someone is upset that an off-road with KDSS is actually more capable than his TRD PRO

I think it's because the PRO accessories are all installed after the truck arrives in the US. They probably don't want to mess with it when they're slapping on the logos and shocks.

 

I can see the benefits of the KDSS in theory, though in my test drive I honestly didn't notice much difference... That being said I only drove around a couple city blocks.

I went with a SR5 with 4WD because of PRICE. No shame in my game. If I could of afforded the extra price I would of picked the Off-road. I'm not a huge fan of the pro grille or wheels to be honest... Though I don't hate on those that have it...

The only thing I really wish my SR5 had that comes on other trim levels is locking Diffs... I don't need KDSS, MTS, or Crawl control. But locking differentials would be useful.

 

Off Road doesn't have pro grill or pro wheels.

Even an SR5 can have pro wheels for $.

 

I think the multi terrain is pretty cool. But, if I'm not mistaken, the A-trac can have a similar effect. I think they both modulate the brakes to control wheel spin. The MTS just fine tunes it for different surfaces.

Check your manual, though. It might be worth messing with the A-trac in slippery conditions.

 

I understand that, thats why i would of chose the offroad instead of the PRO if i was willing to spend the extra cost on higher trim levels.... Im not a fan of those items personally. I actually like the SR5 wheels. I really wanted a set on my tacoma before i traded it in LOL

I have played with the A-trac a few times in soft sand and mud. Its OK. I offroad quite a bit. Where i live its easy and convenient. 3 nice locations within 5 miles and i live 1.5 miles from pavement. 2 miles from a racetrack with a mud bog track... Its very common here. But doubt i will use the a-trac much and likely wouldnt use crawl control or MTS much either. Locking diffs i would certainly use when needed though.

I use the MTS a lot, but I don't know if I really need to. I exercised the locking diff in a gravel parking lot recently. I can't imagine ever using it unless I'm in some really nasty mud.

I visit Florida every winter. I might be looking to do some mild off-roading in or near the Fort Meyers area this winter. Any recommendations in the Lee County area?

 

Thats about 4 hours from me, and a bit more south than i like to go unless i REALLY need to LOL. There's lots of areas though, more sand/mud and not much rock crawling. But i bet if you join the facebook "florida 4runner" group someone local to there could point you in the right direction, but even the people local to that area likely come north to the citrus wildlife management area. Seems to be where the florida offroad guys meet the most.

I live in a small town in levy county, 1 redlight and barely 1000 people, and i have some pretty good places VERY close, so i have yet to go to Citrus, which is an an hour and a half away from me, but from the pictures and videos it looks like a great place. LOTS of trails. I plan to check it out once im lifted and get my tires on. Lift goes on Friday. 285s being ordered Thursday. Almost there!!

 

I'm sure I'll find opportunities to use the locker. I just think of it as a last resort. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

I am the same way. I said earlier that I bought the off-road to compensate for my lack of experience. Really, I just wanted any advantage I could get.

 

Seems like a no-brainer to avoid kdss equipped trucks if you plan to lift or alter the suspension. Not that it can’t be done, but because it’s just not necessary. You’re putting on a new suspension and choosing the characteristics of that suspension intentionally. That, along with the fact that you might introduce problems to the kdss system.

I sort of see kdss as a “companion” to the factory suspension and nothing more.

 

I understand kdss to be something to make “off road” engineered/designed trucks “feel better” on pavement. Kdss isn’t intended to enhance off road capability/performance. Kdss is intended to make an “off road” engineered truck a little nicer to drive on pavement (ie. reduced body roll around town or high speed cornering). You don’t want reduced body roll off road. You want the roll to absorb the bumps.

Basically, all 4runners are great off-road. But those equipped with kdss are a little more pleasant to drive on pavement. Is this not accurate?

 

Did you even read any of the posts about people lifting KDSS equipped trucks with no problems?

 

No, it's not.

KDSS equipped vehicles also have better suspension articulation off road.

The system enhances on road driving while making it more capable off-road.

If anything, the KDSS is more beneficial off-road than on road. That's why it's so brilliant.

If you read about how it actually works, you'll understand why we like it so much. If there was no real benefit, I certainly would not have paid extra for it.

Whether you're lifted or not has no bearing on how it functions.

As far as being concerned about reliability; saying that you wouldn't want it because of potential failure is like saying that you wouldn't want a locker because you're afraid it might fail. They both offer real advantages in certain scenarios. Either one could potentially fail.

 

Good to know. I had no idea it improved off road performance. I Thought it was strictly to make the trucks drive better on pavement.

But then you add in the 4' 10" 350lb driver and it makes up for my fake hood scoop.

 

LOL. I'm not a fan of hood scoops on most trucks or SUVs... But I'm also 5'9" and only 152 pounds. Guess I'm a unicorn LOL

The Silverado jackal by powerpax looks pretty good with a scoop... Stage 3.. I'd love that truck. But $$$

 

How'd this turn into the hood scoop thread?

I thought about swapping for a non-scoop hood. But it doesn't really bother me, except when the sun hits it just right.

I'm pretty sure the fake scoop doesn't create any noticeable drag on these things. It's surely no worse than the roof racks many of us install.
