Hey guys. I recently purchased a TRD Off Road with a leveling kit. I want to get a bigger tire to make it look more aggressive. Everything is stock but the leveling kit. I was looking at 285/70R17s, but I have been seeing mixed reviews on scrubbing and what modifications needed to be done. I am looking at KO2s or maybe Ridge Grapplers? Can anyone tell me if I can run this size tire with a leveling kit? Should I go to a 275/70R17? I am currently running 265/75R17. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. 2018 4Runner.jpg

I run the 285 Ridge Grapplers and had to do a body mount chop and remove my mud flaps with a 2inch spacer497EE40A-5256-43FF-A5E3-C1783E564636.jpg

I think you should put the 285s on and see how it goes, some folks did not have to do the BMC. I have a 2 1/2” lift and needed to have it done.

The BMC is a body mount chop. The bigger tires will rub on the body mount right by the fender well. If you know how to weld you can do it in your yard.

I have a leveling kit and 285/70/17's. 1.5" lift in front and 0" in the back. I did not need a body mount chop, but I did have to do the fender liner mod.

If you keep the stock wheels (or stock wheel specs), align your truck so the caster is close to 4* and don't use a wheel spacer, you shouldn't need to do anything too crazy to make 285's fit.

What does your front 1.5" leveling kit consist of?

Is the extent of your leveling kit just the Eibach shocks? Sorry for all the questions - I want to pick up the front of my T4R OR, but come from a '13 Tacoma, and am unfamiliar with T4R lifts...any links for your leveling kit?

No prob. Happy to answer any questions.

Yes, as of right now I just have the Eibach adjustable shocks with the stock coils up front. Similar concept to the Bilstein 5100s, but I think the Eibach's ride better in every way.

    Here's a link:

    https://eibach.com/us/i-8910-pro-truck-sport-shock-ride-height-adjustable-single-front.html

You can adjust these front shocks to 4 different height levels. 0", 0.8", 1.6", and 2.5".

0.8" will retain a bit more factory rake if that's what you like and 1.6" will get you closer to level, while retaining a slight amount of factory rake (I'm still 1/4" higher in the rear when measuring from the center of hub to the bottom of fender). I kept my stock shocks in the back and it actually still rides pretty nice like this.

To get it to ride even better, I plan to buy a pair of 1.5" Dobinson lift coils for the front and set the Eibach's back down to the 0" setting and pair that up with some Fox Factory Race series adjustable shocks in the back. I think that set-up will ride tits.

Thanks for the info and the link, much appreciated. Exactly what I am looking for. If you wouldn't mind, please tag me when you do the upgrades to the front springs and rear shocks, I would love to see the before and after results! I can't seem to leave anything stock...

Did you have your 4R aligned after the Eibach install?

I'm running a 3" lift with 285s and still get a little rubbing on the body mount; i will eventually have this chopped but right now that's about the only modification i'll have to make for this tire size.

I do appreciate the response guys. I will try the 285/70r17. Is is pricey to get the BMC done? I don't want to live in the dog house when my wife finds out.

I think they might make it worse.

Yes, you will want to get it aligned after any suspension replacement like this. I think there is great value in getting a lifetime alignment at a reputable shop.

On my alignment, I asked the shop to push my caster to as close to 4* as they could. This helps push the tire forward slightly to get it away from body mount interference. It also helps with tracking straight and true down the highway. I did have a little interference with the fender liner in the front after this, but pushing the fender liner forward and trimming a small piece of fender flare is a lot easier than doing a body mount chop. You can complete the fender liner mod with a phillips screw driver and a box cutter.

This is correct. Wheel spacers will make rubbing more likely on our vehicles. Stay with the stock wheel specs for your best chances of not rubbing.
