I’m here to settle a dispute.

With price tags going up on the 4runners top trim, the TRD pro, I’m wondering if it’s even worth the money. Sure the TRD pro has some pretty cool options including a sweet roof rack and grille. But, the estimated price for 2020 is 50k+ and that’s before adding whatever options there might be.

With starting price of 38k would it be more cost efficient to go with the TRD off-road model and customize from there?

Is the 2020 even worth the price increase? Or would you go for a used slightly modified t4r?

PS: Moderator, please move thread to 5th gen 4runners forum.

What are you planning to do, are you going to change the suspension out, if so avoid the Pro. Are you interested in KDSS, it is only offered on the off road. For me the increase to a pro was not worth it, I have options they didn't offer on the pro and I'm happy with the trail premium (TRD off-road). There was nothing on the pro that I could not add for less than the dealer wanted if I chose to add them (grill, wheels & lift).

Leave it totally stock? Splurge for the Pro, I think the FOX shox are amazing on it... damn near a baby raptor SUV.
Going to lift it? The pro is a waste, Go TRD offroad.

I choose the Pro, its my daily driver, not going to lift it for several years, and any mods I will do, once I get some mileage on her, well I'll give you a hint: those start with Magnuson and end with supercharger.

Also, most importantly, I think it is utterly hilarious you think you are going to settle a dispute by going on an internet forum... That is literally the very last, most highly unlikely result you will get here...

Are you comparing a base TRDOR with the Pro, or the TRDORP w/KDSS? Because that's about $5k difference there in sticker alone.

*Actually, let's walk this back, I'm calling shennanigans entirely on all of this

Base TRD OR $38k and change
TRD ORP w/ KDSS $43k and change
    TRD PRO $46k and change

That's the MSRP for each, YMMV on actual agreed sales price

Thank you for humoring me. Next time I’ll do a search first. Wasn’t sure about what the KDSS was until I did some research. Seems like a cool option to have. I guess I wasn’t sure what I would do with the 4Runner once I got it. I do know eventually I would like to add some nice tires, lift a couple inches, cut the bumper and add a brush guard. I want to keep it versatile as it will also be my everyday vehicle. As I get comfortable I eventually want to do some over-landing and buy a tent attachment.
Sounds like a good plan. Would you say it’s worth the money doing it that way and eventually lifting it for some off roading? I’m honestly not sure how I will feel about it once I get one and how far I will want to go. Just trying to figure out what’s the best choice.
Those prices are changing drastically for the 2020 models. Still, buying used is an option. I thought there was a cut and dry answer. What I’m understanding is if I plan on moding I might as well go with the off-road. Is there any circumstance where you would go for the TRD pro? Excuse my naivety I’m new to all of this.

Pro if you plan to stay stock. But we know no one does that.

No sense pay extra if you plan on ripping the suspension out. The rest of the differences are minor.

Exactly why I didn't go with the Pro, that and the dealer refused to play my numbers game...

You also have to take into account that most dealers aren’t giving deals on pros. Around my way most dealers have 1 on the lot. Therefore they aren’t giving incentives to move them. Personally I’d do with a TRD OR. Most things can be added on such as leather seats (katzkin), TRD pro wheels, AT tires, ETC. Plus the pro is already built so where’s the fun in adding your own mods and doing it yourself :D. It’s all up to you though! The pro is very sexy I will say that.

Pro has a mean look, is great out of the box (although most 4Rs are), and the Fox suspension is really nice.

But many feel the OR is the best bang for your buck, and some feel it’s superior with the KDSS. It also helps that some are willing to pay ridiculous prices for the Pro special colors.

In the end it depends on what you want to get out of it.

And most people here are pretty nice but they do like searches. Happy hunting.

Pro is the top of the line model for offroading, it is an upgraded offroad model. As mentioned if you will keep it stock get the pro it's ready to go plus it looks a lot sexier. I cant stand the fugly offroad wheels.

So, if the sticker msrp on an TRDOR (with nothing but Etune) shows $39,700 with slash mark, how much of a discount would one expect prior to tax, tags, etc.?

I believe we have a thread for what prices people report actually paying. Edmunds and TrueCar I believe both offer local market and options/trim based estimates of fair purchase prices.

Not to hijack the thread, but if a 19 TRDOR with almost no options has been sitting on a lot for 6 months (msrp $39,700ish) and multiple dealer sites advertise the same model 36.5-37k, what could be a first volley offer figure? Would it be unheard of to be able to drive it off the lot at 36K?

I got my OR Premium for $38k. Believe the window sticker was $41.5k.

I had parked next to a TRD Pro. The front sat about an inch higher, back was the same height. To me, the Pro is just another appearance package.

Gotta say this thread has really convinced me of the value of going with the TRD off-road. I think I’ll go with the premium for the few creature comforts. But what really won me over besides the price is the KDSS. After researching it that feature is really a decision changer. Very odd that it’s not offered on the TRD pro.

It's a love-hate option, and if you want to lift big it can be limiting, but people who like KDSS really seem to like it

Some people see the kdss as something that can break and not cheap to fix.

Other than that, if you don’t want a special color or the trd bling, no reason to get one.

    I like my voodoo blue

I have a 17 Pro bought brand new. Been thru all the mods with my 15 Tacoma Sport. Took all the mods off and sold them. 11000 miles on my Pro and have no intentions of modding it. Like it just the way it is. Thought about moving up to a 2019 or 2020 Pro but it don’t make sense to do that.

Just my $0.02, don't want any hurt feelings. Only reason to get the Pro is if you love the exclusive paint color that they change every year. The blue from 2018 was sick. Army Green is going to look great too I suspect.

Otherwise you get the same engine and transmission as every other model. Pretty much everything else can be made to look identical to a Pro if that's your thing. If they offered the V8 in the Pro, that would probably change the math for me.

I liked the KDSS and cloth seats, and lack of sunroof, so for me the base model TRD Offroad was ideal. A base model SR5 can be made as good as a Pro without breaking the bank.

One of the big difference with the Pro over the others it will hold its value better. I thought about going with the off road. The reason I did not I did not want to go thru modding it. Everyone’s situation is different. This is one of the reason I don’t want to trade up to a 2019 or 2020. My 17 has 11000 miles on it. I can get almost what I paid for it but Toyota keeps jumping the prices up. 2019 Pro msrp are 48,000. Don’t even know what the 2020 will be.

I always hear people worrying about a vehicle holding value. Its a 4R not a classic or Ferrari.

Holding value should be the least of your concerns if you ask me.

With total obliviousness to the hypocritical nature of this comment I'm about to make...

Not everyone wants to buy a new car, and proceed to rip it apart for aftermarket stuff. Getting back to alignment specs that drive decently and don't destroy tires is more than shocks and springs, I think UCA are necessary. That is a lot to swap on a new truck. I personally think a lot of aftermarket stuff rides like crap. Those little companies will never have the same design and testing resources as an OEM does. Something else that bothers me greatly, a lot of lift kits get rid of the factory rake the vehicle has. Getting rid of that caster makes the truck steer like crap, i feel.

I went with the Pro because if I am going to dump a few grand into the truck, I'm going to supercharge it. The stock FOX shox rides great, floats down fireroads like a luxury car, is plenty capable for the weekend exploring trips with the fam.. Although I do wish I could wedge 33's on there with out rubbing.. My only complaint is the severe lack of HP,, especially at elevations.. Thus the supercharger is in "need" column, not "want".
