I'm looking at a 2019 4runner that has the KDSS option. I pretty much only drive the highway to and from work, and would like to have 4wd for the weather and some dirt road travel.

I was reading on google that the KDSS system can be noisy when on the highway or hitting bumps. Is this true? Should I just go for a model without KDSS?

Was also looking at a nightshade mode, but not sure I like the constant AWD.

I have zero noise from KDSS. Drive one with KDSS and one without then decide. I think you'll go with the KDSS. Enjoy the hunt.

Test drive with and without KDSS. What's your concern about the AWD?

    No noise from my KDSS.

I agree with @Toffees ; drive both if possible.

Also, i can't see any negative with the full time AWD. My '03 had it. I had no problems. You can lock it in 4WD or 4LO if needed, if I'm not mistaken.

Yep, it's just like the other 4WD models, except it has the AWD/FT4WD instead of 2WD mode. Or you can lock it in 4H and 4L.

Go with the KDSS - great system. I love that it reduces body roll when cornering and if you are doing alot of highway driving this will make the ride better. Extreme 4 wheelers may not prefer it as it may limit the wheel travel when articulating from side to side. I bought a 2014 Trail for my boys to share with a modest 2" lift and I am glad they have it from a safety perspective - less body roll means more control for those young drivers ....

KDSS actually allows greater side to side articulation when off roading. It's really a brilliant system!

I have KDSS on my ORP. It gives better articulation (keeps the tires on the ground where the traction is) when negotiating off-road holes, ruts, and rocks. Since it’s better articulated, it allows them to make the sway (anti-roll) bars stiffer so there is noticeably less roll on smooth roads. If your normal is graded roads, you won’t benefit from the articulation, but, depending on your driving style. you might find the anti-roll a plus.

Well, I decided to go with a Nightshade model. I know. It’s a grocery go get’er, but I don’t do a lot of true off road (only country roads). Thanks for all the info.
