Hello! New to the forum, hope to get some good opinions on choosing an aftermarket auxillary lighting option for back roads and offroad use.

I used to wire rally pack lights for a living but this was back when halogen was still king and Hella 500 or Bosch pencil beams were a requirement for every Audi/VAG we built that shipped new with the govt mandated sealed beam headlamps!

All of my current vehicles use aftermarket 5 to 7 in globes, usually Hella 500 or 700 with 100W Hallogen bulbs and handbuilt, oversized harnesses.

I have ended up with a preference for Hella but that is just because it's what we used in our shop and what I'm comfortable with.

I'm planning on installing a similar set up on my new 2016 4Runner. I don't need lots of up close light that a light bar would provide, I'm able to use 2 globe style lights on the road up to 8".

Before I buy 2 Hella Rallye 4000 Xenon HID lamps, is there a newer/better/cheaper alternatives y'all could recommend?

Those fogs are Baja Designs. They sell a kit that allows mounting of their LED pods into the factory location. They sell a DOT legal pod that will work with it, but some people run the no DOT legal (brighter, possibly blinding oncoming drivers) pods.
I have a set of the non DOT legal I ran on my Tacoma, just havent put them on the 4R yet. They are great lights.

Wow! That's a pretty clean set up and Baja makes some really fantastic products - I remember just on the tail end of when I worked for race teams we started to see some of their early LED technology and the lights were very well built.

I need to keep this lighting below the edge of the hood for Vermont inspections - and I couldn't find a low mounted light bar that would push useable light out to 800 -1000 meters. I ended up ordering three Hella Rallye 4000i HID 8.75" lamps with 35w bulbs and 50kv ballasts.

Im sure folks here have seen em before with the red ring and aluminum housings. These put usable light out to 2800 feet - where my lighting setup on they CJ7 is all about excellent dispersive lighting for trail and slow back road use, I need lights I won't out-drive at 70mph on the highway for the 'yoder.

I think that I need to take Baja seriously when it comes time to add perimeter lighting and possibly a removable light bar pod system for the roof when doing more extended off roading.

Once I get the lights home and installed I'll make sure to post a few photos. I'm definitely excited about having 18000 lumens running on a measly hundred and five Watts!

Caliraised off-road has some good quality products at cheaper prices. I would give them a try!

So it turns out that my initial plan to buy those Hella HID has fallen through - Hella decided to discontinue them - and have no suitable replacement (good news for Baja!) Not sure anyone else in the marketplace can throw light 2300 feet like those wicked 9 inch globes could. .. since I have a rep here on the thread, any moderate spread (40m) high speed lamps in your catalog? Not many people up in my neck of the woods running Baja yet, mostly Rigid and cheap Chinese knock-offs. Like I said, I had a chance to check out some of your really early products back when I was still building rally cars and was very impressed! Would love to find a way to bring Baja into the scene up here!

Unless you have any old La Paz kicking around, gathering dist, ya know.. . ;)

Most stuff from Baja you can pick your bean pattern. If you really want to throw some light into the distance Baja even has some laser lights.

These are the lights that fit the foglight kit, this is the Squadron Pro in driving combo beam pattern, you can do them in a spot pattern or the racer ones that are an even narrower light with more throw.

I ended up picking up a set of LP9 pro's. Hopefully they'll show up in a few days and I'll get to wiring them. Excited to see if the light is as usable as what I've grown to expect with really high-end HID. Nobody up here has spent any real money on Baja lights - we pretty much only see knockoff clones and a few ditch lights mounted on A pillars. I take lighting seriously as I see it as a safety and performance upgrade - even a stock 4Runner is faster than its lighting at night - and it is slow AF. I'm not much of a sticker bitch but I just this a Baja Designs sticker on the rig - thanks to https://www.4runners.com/members/avh128avh128.7706/
    for reminding me about Baja!
