OK peeps it’s that time of year when neonate snakes start hatching. I would like to promote their ability to control pests. And are very good to have around. In the last two days I’ve gotten pics of two Black Rat Snakes people have killed. Yes they strike but cant even break the skin. Just let them crawl away and disappear. Or have a neighbor remove them.
This is a juvenile Black Rat Snake!! They turn black at around three feet....If you have a question and need an I.D. On one post here before hacking it’s head off please......038DA20F-61AC-44C7-A0CC-EB30304FE736.jpgD67FDF07-27CA-4AC8-85B2-AE8C5264B6A8.jpg

I got nailed by a cotton mouth about 30 years ago on a lake in Florida. Wasn’t a pleasant experience. But, I still have to catch every snake I came across. I always let them go unharmed.

All danger noodles to me. Got bit by a copperhead when I was 15 and again by a cottonmouth when I was 17. Bit me on the shin and got my dog in the eye and snout. She ended up not surviving. I kill all snakes when I see them.

I absolutely hate snakes with a passion. I don't go out of my to kill them but if they're where I am they're getting a .410 shell. Bought a judge specifically for that purpose and it does an excellent job.

Any help identifying this fellow? My best guess is a blotched/Texas water snake, but it could be a cottonmouth or rat snake or anything else. Without seeing the head, difficult to tell. Haven't seen him/her again, and I hope it feels the same about me as I did when meeting it unexpectedly in my hose box.

We have garter snakes in our yard occasionally. I like having them around, and even put little snake ladders in our basement window wells so they can climb out if they get in there. I never understood the need to kill the non-poisonous ones just because they are snakes.

I agree...I love garter snakes they are good for a healthy yard in my opinion. Had a couple garter snakes as a kid. Two gold fish every couple weeks kept them happy. I have multiple around my property now that usually stay pretty well hidden unless I accidentally clip one with the lawn mower...but I always go grab a shovel and chop their head off to put them out of their misery and bury them right there on the spot.

Just wish I had a couple bigger snakes roaming around to chase the rabbits and chipmunks away. Mostly the rabbits as those effers have been going to town on my flowers all year....even that Deer and Rabbit repellent that would make you gag is pointless as it washes away every time I water.

I’ve never understood people’s absolute fear of snakes. Most people never encounter venomous ones and they are easily identifiable. Most snake bites aren’t even painful, even getting nailed by a cottonmouth only felt like a bee sting. My wife is deathly afraid of snakes and one time she had just gotten out kf the shower and one slithered right past her. Scared to death she jumped on the kitchen table. Luckily for her, she had her cell phone with her. Unluckily for her, she was stark naked and the only person she could get ahold of was her sister’s husband who came and caught the snake, while she stood in her birthday suit on the table lmao. Since then, I’ve actually gotten her to handle several snakes I’ve caught and her fear has lessoned drastically.

That's one of those don't notice it until you go to wind the hose back up......pretty sure that would make me jump back and go grab my extension pole and start making karate noises.

That's a funny/embarrassing/terrifying story about your wife. I think the answer for most is that snake encounters are unexpected. But some people are simply naturally uneasy about most animals to begin with.

The Mrs had disconnected the sprayer and I was planning to wash out my floor mats, so I popped open the top to the box and froze. I think we both had the same response. I was able to get a picture, and i could see the head, but not clearly, and it didn't come out in the picture. When I had calmed down (and returned, tooled up) he'd skedaddled.

I love snakes, they're awesome. I found a little tiny garter snake the other day making its way across the sidewalk. It just hung out in my hand for a little bit, and I released it back into the grass. The bull snakes in the area scare the crap out of people. I wish there were more of them to take care of the voles and rabbits!

When I was a kid, my friends and I would purposely put old lumber out in the fields so we could return in a few days and see what we could find. Our most common catches were little brown and redbelly snakes. We rarely saw anything larger than garter snakes, maybe an occasional eastern milk snake.

Not a fan of snakes, like most people. I used to live in Arizona out in the country and had a few rat snakes around the property, which is a good sign. They kill rattlers, supposedly.

But, my driveway was 1/2 mile long and the last 1/4 mile was asphalt, so the rattlers would come out and sun themselves in the morning when I was on my way to work. When I came upon a diamondback, they would slither off as my car approached. When I came upon a Mojave Green rattlesnake, they would coil up and even come at my car. I would stop and kill them. Nasty things.

One time, I was changing out the fuel filter on my suburban in my buddy's driveway one early evening and I heard a weird hissing sound coming from the edge of the driveway, about 5' from my head. Stupid diamondback came up and decided I was in his territory. I still have the scar from getting out from under that Suburban.

I also used to be a federal park ranger along the Snake river in Idaho and Washington. Part of my job was to respond to reports of rattlesnakes in public rec areas and kill them.

No rattlesnakes at the elevation I now live, just lots of Garter snakes, which I leave alone, but the neighbor's cat loves to kill them.

Im on the edge of Milksnake country. I’ve only seen one my friend brought me and I took it to where he found it and let it go. My favorite snake: Honduran Milksnakes....

Always makes me nervous posting pics online from my phone. My wife likes to send me pictures of herself that I certainly wouldn’t want anyone else seeing. Haha
