The family and I are moving from Boston to Dayton. Her company will be moving the bulk of our things but I we will be out there for a at least 1 month before that happens so we need to take at least a month's worth of clothes and other necessities with us. I'm trying to decide if we should get a car top carrier, a hitch mount carrier or just rent a trailer. We will have my 3 month old son with us so I'm trying to keep the interior of the vehicle filled will soft items and keep the height of everything below the rear seats JUST in case we get into a fender bender. (Don't want a fully loaded tote to slide over the seat, obviously).

Some extra info: My parents live ~4 hrs away so if we load up a trailer they will have to help store it for awhile, I know they will say no problem but also don't want to inconvenience them.

We'll be in a 2019 TRD Pro so the roof rack is kinda small.

My only issue with the hitch mount carrier is gaining access to the hatch and concerns about theft as we will be breaking up our drive into at least 2 days.

Any thoughts idea's let me know.

    Thank you all

Rent a U-Haul enclosed cargo trailer. They have surge brakes. And it's a one way rental trip.
I'm moving from CA. to MT. But I bought a 6x10 enclosed trailer in MT. and saved a $1,000 because it was on sale and no sales tax plus a permanent tag.
We have a lot of antiques so we didn't want to "trust" a moving co. or their sub-contractors.
And we've made six trips so far.

First off, nice truck and hello form another Bostonian. The roof top cargo box wont fit with the 2019 TRD Pro roof rack. The box sits too far back and you cant open the tailgate without hitting the box. You could do a cargo bag up top though. But no safety with that. I bought an all black roof rack from a TRDORP on these forums so i could put a roof box on (also as a plus i can now park in Bostons tiny garages.)

This is what I was thinking. I don't have my Pro with me here *at work* but there is an FJ in the parking lot and the dimensions seem like it will fit nicely into the roof rack

I'm with @alittleoff , rent a small enclosed Uhaul trailer for this trip. Also you are already seeing the short comings of the stock PRO rack so why spend money on something you probably won't use long term? IMO, Save that money for a better rack and something more useful in the future.

Also another thing with a rental trailer, it gets rid of most if not all of your months worth of clothes, and necessities from behind your son. And you only need to keep a few things in the back for your 2 day/overnight trip. The trailer is also lockable.
