    have u found that the 4runner and tacomas are pretty well matched on the trail? i guess that depends on gear, but have been curious if one is superior to the other in 4x4 performance.

    This video shows they both do pretty well even though the more built Jeeps obviously are better in these conditions. Also looks like the 4runner guy decided to pull out as he was beating the crap out of his $40K plus vehicle. The Tacoma soldiered/slammed on.

    @Watt maker. Pretty much nailed it.

    I think the 4runner might have a slight advantage in stock form due to the shorter wheelbase. And, I think the 4runner comes with a size larger tires (i could be wrong)

    On the other hand, for higher speed cruising on gravel and dirt roads, the Tacoma's longer wheelbase could be an advantage.

    An not just the shorter wheelbase. The weight distribution is huge as far as capability off road with the 4. Dry, mud, whatever.. For example, in Winter conditions, the 4 is like a snow machine.
