Hey everybody. I had a 4Runner, then got into a Tacoma, and now looking at getting back into a 4Runner. Granted, the answer might be a bit biased on the 4Runner Forum, but I’m curious if anyone prefers the Taco over the Runner? Here’s my listing on TW if anyone is interested https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2017-trd-pro-utah.621815/

I had a 2nd gen Taco. IMHO the Tacoma towed better and hauled better obviously cause of the bed. I use my trailer a lot more which can be a huge PITA. I also prefer the looks of the 2nd gen vs my 5th gen 4R. But with all of that I still would not go back to a Tacoma. The 4Runner is a much more civilized vehicle on the street and in the comfort department. I would buy a Tundra before I went back to a Tacoma.

I prefer the 4Runner. That's why I have 2. If I was to get a pickup it would be a Tundra.

I changed some lights, tires and tinted windows...mind blowing huh
I miss my 2nd gen taco sometimes but not that often, I love the looks of the 3rd gen tacos but not with all the problems they have. I am in love with my 5th gen 4runner, large enough inside, rides well and I can haul all my crap safely, securely and dry(ly). The taco is like an ex, fun to look at and think of the good stuff but I moved on to better things.

Have a 2003 Taco 4x. Work really well off road (stock size A/T tires and 1300 lbs lighter than my 5th gen T4R, I don’t know if it can get stuck). Alas, it’s a truck and rides like a truck. Ok on long trips, but with the 2.7L 4 banger and manual trans, and wanting to pull a small travel trailer, after 250,000 miles, we upgraded (still have it for going to the dump and Home Depot, and we may be moving to an area with snow so it’s still in the stable). T4R rides a lot better (happy wife, happy life).

They’re sweet...but the downfall and what seems to be the reason a lot of people stopped buying them was the 8spd transmission.

For me personally, I’d buy a tundra over the taco (which I did prior to my runner)

If I hadn’t spent thousands modding my Taco I’d have a Runner....

So no, unless you specifically need a bed, a T4R is built better - still made in Japan, more interior LOCKABLE space, 1 piece drive shaft, shorter wheel base for off-roading....

4Runner is a superior vehicle, but I really enjoy driving my manual Taco. It's a great little truck and you can't beat it for dog hauling and dirty jobs. If I absolutely to choose though, it'd be the 4R.

6 speed trans. And it sucks imo. I hated my 3rd gen Tacoma. Loved my 2nd gens.

I had a 2nd gen taco at one time. I regretted getting rid of it eventually, but then I went to Tundras and loved those, my 14 Platinum crewmax was awesome and had lots of space. Im enjoying being back in a mid size as well though with my 5th gen 4R

I have both and like both. My 2017 Taco is much better since I got the computer update. Added some sumo springs to stiffen up the back and like the ride much more. I like the 5 speed in the 4runner more. I drive mostly in S4 in the taco which is not that bad.
I still have faith in Toyota. I think the 3rd gen taco will be just as reliable and durable as previous generations. May not be as fun to drive. However, I still think it is much better than any other midsize.

I have a 2006 Tacoma. It is more fun to drive because it has the Icon stage 6 suspension.

I miss the heck out of my Tacoma. If it had the space of the 4Runner I’d have another. The build quality of the two is apples to oranges in favor of the runner

Had a Tacoma. It was way too small in my opinion. Decided I’ll upgrade to a tundra. MPG isn’t great and too big for what I need. 4Runner is the perfect fit :D

I've had 3 tacomas and loved every one of them. The last was a 2017 4WD and it was awesome. Absolutely no issues with the transmission or anything. Traded it in on the T4R... BUT Came very close to trading it in on a 2019 tacoma instead of a 2019 4runner.

The fact that they couldn't get me the color and options i wanted on the taco right away pushed me a little bit into the 4runner more as well. Ive always liked the looks of them and after the test drive i was pretty much settled on it.

Im happy with the Runner, but do miss several things about the tacoma. I miss the screen on the dash, all the options to customize what you see at a given time, also REALLY miss seeing my tire pressure, miss the ground clearance, and miss the bed every time i need to haul trash to the landfill or wanna take my kayak out. I have a trailer but its not as convenient.

The T4R drives better, its smoother, and my kids enjoy the bigger backseat and charge ports back there. I dont regret the trade at all, but i do miss the tacoma. I love em both. Probably equally for different reasons.... Once i get the runner lifted a bit and some more aggressive tires im sure i will love it even more.

This is something that I think Toyota misses the mark on. In my opinion the Tacoma and the 4Runner shouldn’t be so different interior wise. I still don’t understand how my 2016 Tacoma TRD OFfroad had active tire pressure monitors that told me exact pressure, drop to charge pad, and push to start yet my 19 4Runner has none of these features.

Nope. The new Tacoma sucks. I would buy a Ford Ranger instead. 2nd gen Tacomas were ok with the 1st gen being the best Tacoma.

BUT.... BUT...The ranger is so god awfully UGLY!! LOL

And they have their own set of issues as well. The 10 speed transmission has had quite a bit of problems. Google it. People think the tacoma transmission shifts a lot.... Shit... that ranger NEVER finds a gear. Ive driven one and it was complete crap.My buddy had to lemon out his ranger. I warned him not to buy that ugly truck but he didnt listen.

Like everything in the world thats produced in mass, there will be issues with EVERY brand. I had 3 different 3rd gens and not a single issue with ANY of them. The transmission was great in all of them... One, 2016 SR 4cyl, was totaled because of a young lady not paying attention, next an SR5 V6 2wd was traded after a year because i regretted not getting a 4WD. So i got another SR5 v6 dcsb in 4WD... All 3 were great trucks.

Looks are subjective, but i never even thought of owning a tacoma until the 3rd gens came out. I owned chevy and jeeps... Soon as i seen a 3rd gen i became a tacoma fan.

Some people expect more than a truck will deliver. Same with these 4runners. People call them slow and complain about their fuel economy all the time... They are not sports cars. The numbers, higher torque than HP with neither being close to 300, should be a good indication of how its meant to be driven. The body on frame creates a heavier vehicle with low gas mileage.... Its not meant for 0-60s and quarter mile times thats for certain. The gearing is great for low speed off road use and moderate speeds on road. Its a very comfortable middle of the ground vehicle built to be tough and useful in a wide range of applications while looking good. Jack of all trades but master of none.

Never buy a first year vehicle. The Ranger is better than the current Tacoma. IMO. Hell I would buy the Chevy over the current Tacoma and that is a sad statement.
